Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO BROUGHT HER BACK

Grace wanted him arrested immediately.

Owen did not resist.

"I sent the photo."

Nathan stared at him.

"Why?"

"Because I found Hale's files six months ago."

"You knew Lily existed?"

"I suspected."

"And instead of telling me, you threatened Grace?"

Owen flinched.

"I didn't mean it as a threat."

Grace laughed bitterly.

"COME BACK OR SHE PAYS FIRST?"

"I didn't write that."

Silence.

Detective Ellis leaned forward.

"Explain."

Owen had hired a private investigator to locate Grace.

He asked the investigator to deliver a neutral message requesting contact.

The investigator was one of Arthur Ashford's people.

He changed the message.

He wanted Grace frightened enough to return directly to the Cole estate, where Victoria could identify her.

Owen's mistake had pulled Grace back into danger.

But it had also exposed everything.

Grace did not forgive him.

Not then.

Nathan asked, "Why didn't you tell me when you found Hale's files?"

Owen looked ashamed.

"Because your father recruited me."

Nathan went still.

"What?"

"Charles paid for my military academy. Hired me after service. He told me protecting the Cole family meant protecting you from information that could destroy you."

Nathan's face hardened.

"So everyone decided what I could survive except me."

Owen nodded.

"Yes."

That was the real disease inside the empire.

Control disguised as protection.

Silence disguised as loyalty.

Owen turned over every file he had.

Among them was one final video.

Charles Cole, six months before his death.

He sat alone in his study.

"If Nathan ever learns the truth, he will hate me."

Charles rubbed his eyes.

"He should."

Nathan stopped the video.

Grace said nothing.

He started it again.

Charles continued.

"I told myself I was protecting him from Jonathan's scandals. Then from Claire's grief. Then from Grace. The truth is simpler. I protected what I stole."

Nathan's jaw trembled.

"There is an envelope in my safe for him. Martin has instructions."

Samuel had already delivered that envelope.

But Charles added something nobody expected.

"If Martin is dead, assume Arthur Ashford knows about the Mercer trust. And if Arthur knows, Victoria knows enough to be dangerous."

Victoria had known.

And attacked Grace anyway.

The video ended.

Nathan sat in silence.

Then Grace's phone rang.

Lily's preschool.

Grace answered.

Her face changed.

"What do you mean she's gone?"

Nathan stood.

May you like

Grace's voice broke.

"Where is my daughter?"
