Chapter 3 - THE WARRANT

Grace laughed because the accusation was impossible.

Then nobody else laughed.

Detective Ellis showed her the warrant.

Filed eighteen months earlier.

Complainant: Nathaniel Cole.

Nathan took the paper.

"I never filed this."

The detective said, "It bears your electronic signature."

"It's fake."

"Maybe. Until we verify that, I have procedures to follow."

Lily clung to Grace.

"Mommy?"

Grace kissed her hair.

"I'm right here."

Nathan looked at Ellis.

"You are not taking her away from Lily."

"Then help me prove the warrant is fraudulent."

Owen pulled access logs.

The warrant had been filed through a private family-law firm used by Cole Meridian.

The attorney of record was Martin Hale.

Nathan knew him.

His father's longtime personal counsel.

Still retained by the company.

Nathan called him.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Owen said, "His office lights are on."

Nathan grabbed his coat.

Grace caught his sleeve.

"Don't go alone."

He looked at her injured shoulder.

"You're worried about me?"

"I'm worried about Lily. If something happens to you, your family gets exactly what they wanted."

For the first time, Nathan understood Grace's fear was not weakness.

It was strategy learned under pressure.

Detective Ellis agreed to delay taking Grace into custody while she confirmed the warrant's origin.

Nathan drove with Owen to Hale's office.

The front door was unlocked.

No receptionist.

No security guard.

Martin Hale sat behind his desk.

Dead.

Nathan stopped in the doorway.

Owen swore softly.

Hale's head rested against the chair.

An empty glass sat beside him.

A typed note lay on the desk.

I acted alone.

Nathan stared at it.

"Too clean."

Owen nodded.

"Way too clean."

Police arrived.

Hale's office computer had been wiped.

But one drawer had been left open.

Inside was a photograph.

Nathan and Grace, five years earlier, laughing at a street festival.

On the back, Charles Cole had written:

END THIS BEFORE IT BECOMES PERMANENT.

Beneath it was a second note in different handwriting.

ELEANOR AGREES.

Nathan sat down hard.

Victoria's mother had not been a witness.

She had been a partner.

Then Owen found something tucked beneath the desk blotter.

A storage key.

Unit 417.

The next morning, police opened the unit.

Inside were banker boxes labeled with names.

GRACE BENNETT.

LILY BENNETT.

NATHAN COLE.

VICTORIA ASHFORD.

And one more.

NATHAN - PATERNITY CONTINGENCY.

Nathan stared at the label.

Grace whispered, "What does that mean?"

Owen opened the box.

The first document was a DNA report.

Nathan read the conclusion.

Then he looked at Lily.

The paper said he was not her father.
