Chapter 5 - THE BROTHER NO ONE NAMED

The geneticist explained it twice.

Robert Cole and Nathan shared enough DNA to be half-brothers.

Not uncle and nephew.

Half-brothers.

Nathan sat motionless.

"Charles was my father."

The geneticist said carefully, "Genetics suggest you and Robert likely share a father."

Robert was twenty-one years older than Nathan.

Charles was only seventeen years older than Robert.

The math did not fit.

Unless Charles wasn't Nathan's father.

Nathan stared at the family tree on the whiteboard.

"Then who is?"

Grace sat beside him.

This time, when she reached for his hand, he let her.

Owen searched old family records.

Nathan's mother, Claire Cole, had died when Nathan was twelve.

Charles had raised him alone after that.

Her private files were mostly gone.

But one name appeared repeatedly in old charity records.

Jonathan Mercer.

Founding partner of Cole Meridian.

Robert's biological father.

A man who died when Nathan was two.

Nathan whispered, "Jonathan was Dad's partner."

Grace looked at him.

"Maybe more than that."

A court-approved test using archived medical tissue confirmed it.

Jonathan Mercer was Nathan's biological father.

Charles Cole had raised another man's son.

Why?

The answer was buried in an old shareholder agreement.

Jonathan owned fifty-one percent of the company.

Charles owned forty-nine.

If Jonathan died without a legally recognized child, his shares transferred to Charles.

If he had a child, they went into trust for that child.

Nathan stared at the agreement.

"I was the child."

Grace understood first.

"Charles hid your paternity to take the company."

Nathan felt sick.

His entire inheritance was built on a stolen identity.

But there was more.

Robert's existence complicated everything.

He was Jonathan's older son from a secret relationship.

That meant Robert had a claim too.

"So why was Robert pretending to be my uncle?" Nathan asked.

Owen found the answer in Martin Hale's storage files.

Charles had paid Robert for twenty-five years.

Board salary.

Consulting fees.

Private distributions.

In exchange, Robert kept quiet.

The fake DNA sample came from Robert because it would look related enough to Nathan to survive a careless review but still exclude paternity.

Grace whispered, "They created a backup plan in case Lily surfaced."

Nathan nodded.

If Lily was proven to be Nathan's daughter, she could eventually inherit part of the Mercer trust structure.

If Nathan was exposed as Jonathan's son, Lily became even more important.

Victoria had not attacked a random child.

She had attacked an heir.

Then Nathan remembered something.

His upcoming marriage contract with Victoria.

The Ashford family insisted on it.

He pulled up the draft.

A clause buried on page thirty-eight transferred voting control of certain inherited assets to a marital holding company after the birth of a child.

Victoria's father controlled that company.

Nathan stared at Grace.

"They weren't marrying me."

Grace's face hardened.

"They were acquiring you."

Then Detective Ellis entered with another document.

"We found a hospital record for Lily."

Grace frowned.

"What record?"

"A request filed the day she was born."

Nathan took it.

Emergency guardianship review.

Applicant: Charles Cole.

He had tried to take Lily from Grace before Nathan ever knew she existed.
