Chapter 13 - THE EMPTY CLASSROOM

Lily had not been kidnapped.

Not exactly.

A woman arrived with an emergency pickup authorization.

The document looked valid.

The school released Lily.

Security footage showed the woman.

Eleanor Ashford.

Victoria's mother.

The same woman who helped Charles threaten Grace five years earlier.

Grace nearly collapsed.

"Where would she take her?"

Victoria knew.

Police brought her from custody for an emergency interview.

"My mother's house in Bucks County."

"Why?" Nathan demanded.

"She always said the old house was where family problems got fixed."

Grace stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria shook her head.

"Nothing good."

Police surrounded the property.

Nathan and Grace were ordered to stay back.

Grace refused.

Detective Ellis blocked her.

"If Eleanor sees you, she could panic."

"That's my child."

"And I want her alive."

Those words stopped Grace.

Thirty minutes passed.

Then forty.

A negotiator spoke through the door.

Finally, Eleanor appeared on the porch holding Lily's hand.

Grace stopped breathing.

Lily looked frightened but unharmed.

Eleanor shouted, "You all destroyed everything for a child who should never have existed!"

Nathan stepped forward before police could stop him.

"She exists."

Eleanor looked at him.

"You were supposed to marry Victoria."

"No."

"Our families decided this years ago."

"Then our families were wrong."

"You don't understand sacrifice."

Nathan's voice stayed calm.

"Give me my daughter."

Lily looked at him.

"Daddy!"

Eleanor's grip tightened.

Grace felt terror shoot through her.

"Please don't hurt her."

Eleanor looked at Grace.

"You ruined my daughter."

Grace shook her head.

"Victoria made choices. So did you."

The negotiator edged closer.

Lily suddenly kicked Eleanor's shin.

Eleanor gasped.

Lily ran.

Nathan sprinted forward.

He caught her halfway across the lawn and dropped to his knees around her.

Grace reached them seconds later.

For a moment, all three clung to each other.

Behind them, police arrested Eleanor.

Lily sobbed into Nathan's shoulder.

"I knew you'd come."

Nathan closed his eyes.

"Always."

Grace heard the promise.

She also heard the danger in promises made too easily.

Later, when Lily slept, Nathan found Grace outside the hospital room.

"I meant it."

"I know."

"I won't disappear from her life."

Grace looked at him.

"Then don't promise forever. Show up tomorrow."

He nodded.

"Tomorrow."

Then Samuel arrived carrying a file.

"The court finished reviewing the Mercer trust."

Nathan stood.

"And?"

Samuel looked at Grace.

"There is a clause nobody noticed."

"What clause?"

"Jonathan Mercer left a protected share to the first biological grandchild born through either of his sons."

Nathan looked toward Lily's room.

Samuel continued.

"Lily doesn't just inherit someday."

May you like

He swallowed.

"She controls the deciding vote now."
