Chapter 8 - SOFÍA'S CHOICE

Sofía had been terrified.

The first Alvarado properties were heavily leveraged.

A criminal investigation could have shut down financing.

Hundreds of employees might have lost work.

That was what she told herself.

“I said we should compensate the family privately.”

“Did you?”

“We tried.”

“Héctor stole the money.”

“I learned that years later.”

“And then?”

“I did nothing.”

Mariana walked into the kitchen because her knees felt weak.

Sofía followed.

“Say something.”

“I don’t know what.”

“Be angry.”

“I am.”

“Then show it.”

Mariana turned.

“You don’t get to tell me how to be angry.”

Sofía flinched.

Good.

Then Mariana hated herself for thinking good.

Her mother had made a terrible choice.

She was also seventy-one and shaking beside the refrigerator.

Both things could exist.

“Why didn’t you tell me after Dad died?”

“Because you worshipped him.”

“So you protected the lie.”

“Yes.”

Sofía did not dress it up.

That made it worse.

Mariana returned to Mexico City with a signed statement from her mother.

She released the full eighteen-month-old recording before Arturo could release the edited version.

Then she disclosed Sofía’s statement to investigators.

The company’s shares in a related public vehicle fell sharply.

Three major conferences canceled contracts.

Mariana’s board called an emergency meeting.

Federico demanded she step aside temporarily.

This time, his argument was not absurd.

The crisis had become personal.

Mariana considered refusing.

Then Isabel Torres entered the boardroom.

She had asked to speak.

“My family spent twenty-six years without the truth because powerful people kept deciding what consequences we could handle.”

She looked directly at Mariana.

“If you stay because you think only you can fix this, you’re doing the same thing.”

The room went silent.

Mariana hated her for being right.

She stepped down temporarily as chief executive.

Sergio was appointed interim operating head.

That evening Mariana returned to her empty house.

For the first time in thirteen years, Arturo was not there.

She sat on the kitchen floor.

Then the doorbell rang.

Camila stood outside.

Her mascara was smeared.

She held a pregnancy test.

May you like

Positive.
