Chapter 19 - ARTURO RETURNS

Arturo returned to the hotel eighteen months after the night he ran from table seven.

Not as a guest.

As part of a court-approved mediation involving remaining civil claims.

He wore a gray suit.

No black card.

No entourage.

Mariana met him in a conference room.

He looked at the window.

“You changed the lobby.”

“Yes.”

“My portrait used to be in the charity gallery.”

“It was a wedding photograph.”

“You removed it.”

“We divorced.”

He almost smiled.

Then stopped.

They discussed money for two hours.

Boring money.

Tax allocations.

Legal fees.

A disputed investment account.

This was what endings often looked like.

Spreadsheets.

At the end, Arturo asked:

“Did you know the hotel was yours that whole weekend?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you stop me at check-in?”

Mariana thought about it.

“Because I wanted to see how far you’d go.”

“That was cruel.”

“Yes.”

He looked surprised.

She continued.

“I could have confronted you privately. Instead I arranged table seven because part of me wanted you humiliated.”

“Finally.”

“That doesn’t make what you did smaller.”

“No.”

For once, he did not argue.

Arturo looked older.

“Was any of it real?”

“Our marriage?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“Even at the end?”

“Some of it.”

That answer hurt him more than no.

He stood.

At the door he turned.

“I hated being Mr. Alvarado.”

“You were Ledesma.”

“Not in those rooms.”

Mariana understood.

She did not excuse him.

He had spent years trying to steal enough power to silence an insecurity he refused to name.

“That sounds lonely,” she said.

“It was.”

He left.

Mariana remained seated.

No triumph.

No desire to call him back.

Just quiet.

Then Isabel entered carrying budget files.

“You done?”

“Yes.”

“Good. Housekeeping overtime is wrong again.”

Mariana sighed.

“Romance is dead.”

“Apparently payroll survived.”

May you like

They went back to work.
