Chapter 2 - THE MAN WHO RAN

Arturo made it twelve steps.
Hotel security stopped him before the lobby.
He shouted loud enough for half the restaurant to hear.
“I am not under arrest.”
“No,” Mariana said behind him.
“You’re embarrassing yourself for free.”
He turned.
For a second she saw the man she had married.
Not the polished executive.
The frightened one.
“Mariana, listen to me.”
“I did for thirteen years.”
“This isn’t what you think.”
“Which part?”
“The case.”
Camila approached slowly.
“Why did you run?”
Arturo ignored her.
That hurt Camila more than an answer.
Police arrived because Héctor had filed a theft report months earlier.
Inside the case were original contracts, two encrypted drives, and a notebook.
Arturo insisted he had never seen it.
Then Camila said something nobody expected.
“I saw him put it in the closet.”
Arturo spun toward her.
“You’re confused.”
“No.”
“You were drinking.”
“One glass.”
“Camila.”
She stepped back.
“Don’t.”
Mariana watched them and felt no victory.
Only nausea.
Camila admitted Arturo had arrived at the suite with the case already inside his suitcase.
He told her it contained investor files.
Arturo’s shoulders dropped.
Police took the case as evidence.
They did not arrest him.
Not yet.
At 11:40 p.m., Arturo finally left the hotel.
He had no corporate card.
No suite.
No mistress beside him.
Camila stayed.
Mariana expected satisfaction.
Instead she went into the staff restroom and threw up.
Sergio waited outside with water.
“You all right?”
“No.”
“Good answer.”
She laughed once.
Then her phone rang.
Héctor Salgado.
The man whose stolen case had just appeared in Arturo’s room.
His voice was shaking.
“Mariana, don’t give the police the black notebook.”
“It’s already evidence.”
A long silence.
Then Héctor whispered:
