Chapter 17 - THE HOTEL WITHOUT A THRONE

Mariana returned to work without a ceremony.

Ana remained on the board.

Sergio returned after his suspension, but not as general manager.

He accepted a lower compliance-focused role.

“I deserved worse.”

“Maybe.”

“Thank you for the warmth.”

“You’re welcome.”

Isabel was elected as one of two employee governance representatives.

At her first meeting, she disagreed with Mariana three times.

Mariana found this deeply irritating.

Also useful.

The hotel group created a compensation fund for Gabriel Torres’s family and commissioned an independent review of historical workplace injuries.

Isabel insisted the payment not require confidentiality.

The board agreed.

A memorial scholarship was created in Gabriel’s name for workers’ children.

Mariana initially wanted to fund it personally.

Isabel said no.

“The company failed him. The company pays.”

Mariana nodded.

She was learning.

Arturo’s criminal case moved slowly.

Some financial allegations collapsed because documentation was sloppy.

Others strengthened because of the remote-access evidence.

He accepted a plea agreement on unauthorized access, fraud-related conduct, and coercive commercial practices.

He avoided the sentence Mariana privately wanted.

She hated that.

Then stopped measuring healing in prison years.

Camila gave birth early.

A girl.

Lucía Ríos.

Not named after anyone in Mariana’s family.

Good.

Camila sent one photograph.

Mariana replied:

She’s beautiful. I hope you’re both safe.

Nothing more.

Months later, Camila found work at a small event company.

Lower salary.

No executive gifts.

She kept going.

Sofía began volunteering with the Gabriel scholarship committee.

Isabel objected at first.

Then allowed it under one condition.

“No speeches about redemption.”

Sofía agreed.

At the first scholarship dinner, Mariana stood backstage listening to employees laugh in the ballroom.

Diego approached.

“Table seven is asking for you.”

Her stomach tightened.

“Who?”

He grinned.

“Relax. Anniversary couple. They want to compliment the owner.”

Mariana looked toward the dining room.

“Tell them the owner will come by.”

Diego hesitated.

“Which owner?”

Mariana smiled.

May you like

“Exactly.”
