Chapter 4 - THE HOUSEKEEPER'S DAUGHTER

Her name was Isabel Torres.

Thirty-two.

Assistant housekeeping supervisor.

She had worked at the Gran Hotel Alvarado for nine years.

Mariana knew her face.

That fact made everything worse.

Isabel entered the conference room and looked from Mariana to Octavio.

“What happened?”

Mariana could not find a graceful beginning.

So she did not try.

“We found information about your father.”

Isabel’s expression closed.

“My father disappeared when I was six.”

“He may have died at an Alvarado construction site.”

Silence.

Then Isabel laughed.

A tiny, ugly sound.

“You said may.”

Mariana explained what Héctor claimed.

Isabel listened without crying.

When Mariana finished, Isabel asked one question.

“Did your father know?”

“I don’t know.”

“Convenient.”

“Yes.”

That answer surprised her.

Isabel stood.

“My mother spent twenty years thinking he abandoned us.”

Mariana had nothing useful to say.

“I’m sorry” felt obscene.

She said it anyway.

Isabel stared at her.

“Are you?”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t do it.”

“No.”

“Then don’t borrow guilt because it makes you feel active.”

Mariana went still.

Isabel left.

Octavio whispered, “She’s angry.”

“She should be.”

The hotel board convened that afternoon.

Mariana disclosed the allegation.

Two directors wanted internal investigation only.

Mariana demanded an independent one.

One director, Federico Zamora, snapped:

“You’re prepared to destroy your father’s reputation over the word of a frightened accountant?”

Mariana replied, “I’m prepared to find out whether a man died.”

Federico slammed his folder shut.

“This family built everything you have.”

Mariana looked at him.

“Then it can survive the truth.”

The vote passed narrowly.

That evening, Sergio brought her security footage.

Someone had entered the archive room at 3:12 a.m.

Not Arturo.

Not Héctor.

Federico Zamora.

He left carrying a box marked:
