CHAPTER 3: A Second Chance

Over the following months, Michael began visiting regularly.

At first, Emma kept her distance.

Trust wasn't something that could be rebuilt overnight.

But Lily was different.

She asked endless questions.

What was his favorite color?

Did he like pizza?

Could he ride a bicycle?

Could he teach her someday?

Every answer brought them a little closer.

For the first time in his life, Michael experienced the moments he had missed for nearly a decade.

Helping with homework.

Attending school events.

Listening to bedtime stories.

Watching his daughter laugh.

One evening, after Lily had gone to sleep, Emma found Michael sitting alone on the porch.

"You know," she said quietly, "for years I dreamed about this moment."

Michael looked up.

"And?"

"I imagined screaming at you. Telling you how much pain you caused."

She paused.

"But life is too short to spend forever angry."

Michael stared at her.

"Does that mean you forgive me?"

Emma smiled sadly.

"It means I'm willing to stop hating you."

Months later, something unexpected happened.

Their family slowly began healing.

Not because the past disappeared.

Not because the mistakes were forgotten.

But because they chose to move forward.

Together.

On Lily's tenth birthday, the three of them stood side by side for a family photograph.

As the camera flashed, Lily squeezed both of their hands.

For the first time in ten years, Michael felt something he thought he had lost forever.
