CHAPTER 1: The Knock on the Door
Nine years ago, Michael Walker walked away from everything.
He left behind his wife, Emma, their small apartment, and the promises they had made to each other. Without a warning, without an explanation, he disappeared.
At first, Emma waited.
She called every number she knew. She contacted his friends, his relatives, and even hospitals. But Michael had vanished as if he had never existed.
Months turned into years.
Eventually, Emma stopped searching. The pain never disappeared, but she learned how to live with it. She worked two jobs, rebuilt her life, and convinced herself that the man she once loved was gone forever.
Then one rainy afternoon, everything changed.
Michael stood outside her front door.
His hands trembled as he knocked.
For days he had rehearsed what he would say. He expected anger. He expected tears. He expected the door to slam in his face.
But nothing could have prepared him for what happened next.
The door opened.
Emma stared at him in complete shock.
Before either of them could speak, a little girl appeared behind her.
The child looked about eight years old.
And when Michael saw her face, his heart nearly stopped.
The girl looked exactly like him.
Same eyes.
Same smile.
Same dimple on her left cheek.
For a moment, he couldn't breathe.
"Who is she?" he whispered.
Emma looked directly into his eyes.
"Her name is Lily."

Then she added the words that changed everything.
"She's your daughter."
