CHAPTER 2: The Truth He Never Knew
Michael felt the ground disappear beneath his feet.
A daughter.
For nine years he had lived believing he had left only a wife behind.
He never knew Emma was pregnant when he disappeared.
The little girl stared at him curiously.
"Mom, who is he?" she asked.
Emma remained silent for several seconds.

Finally, she answered.
"He's your father."
Lily's eyes widened.
Michael wanted to speak, but guilt crushed every word before it reached his lips.
That evening, Emma finally told him the truth.
A week before she discovered she was pregnant, Michael had vanished.
She searched everywhere but never found him.
She raised Lily alone.
There were nights when she couldn't afford dinner. There were birthdays when she had to pretend everything was fine. There were school events where Lily watched other children with their fathers and quietly asked why hers never came.
Michael lowered his head in shame.
"I never meant to abandon you," he said.
Emma looked at him skeptically.
"Then where were you?"
Michael took a deep breath.
Nine years earlier, he had become involved in a business deal that collapsed. He owed dangerous people a large amount of money. After receiving threats, he panicked.
Instead of asking for help, he ran.
He changed cities. He changed jobs. He cut off everyone he loved.
At first he intended to return after a few months.
Then fear turned into years.
Years turned into nearly a decade.
When he finally learned the men who had threatened him were long gone, he realized he had destroyed his own life for nothing.
Emma listened quietly.
When he finished, tears filled his eyes.
"I know I don't deserve forgiveness," he said. "But I needed to see you one last time."
Emma didn't answer.
But Lily did.
She walked toward him and asked a simple question.
"Did you ever think about me?"
May you like
Michael broke down crying.
"Every single day."
