CHAPTER 15: THE FUTURE

Hannah is getting married next spring.
She met someone new—a kind man named Daniel who works as a teacher. He's gentle, patient, and loves her for who she is.
Madeline is ten years old now. She's smart and fierce, and she looks at me with the same fire that I once had.
Last week, Hannah asked if I would walk her down the aisle.
"I know you think you're just a diner owner," she said, "but you're so much more than that."
I started crying.
"I'd be honored."
So that's what I'm going to do.
I'm going to walk my daughter down the aisle.
I'm going to watch her marry a good man.
I'm going to spend the rest of my life surrounded by people who love me.
And I'm going to keep helping other women find the strength to walk away.
Because that's what I was meant to do.
That's who I am.
I'm Evelyn Carter.
I'm a survivor.
And I'm not afraid anymore.
