CHAPTER 14: THE NIGHTMARE

I don't have nightmares anymore.

But sometimes, I still think about that floor.

The cold marble. The blood pooling beneath me. The phone just out of reach.

And Vivian, standing over me in her green dress, her voice bored and empty.

But those memories don't control me anymore.

I think about them, and I feel grateful.

Grateful that I survived.

Grateful that I fought back.

Grateful that I found people who believed in me.

Grateful that I had a daughter who gave me strength.

And grateful that I learned the truth.

My brother wasn't my protector.

But I didn't need one.

I was strong enough to protect myself.
