CHAPTER 10: THE REBUILDING

Months passed.

I sold the estate. I donated the money to charities that helped victims of domestic abuse and financial fraud. I kept only enough to start over.

I moved back to the city and opened a small bookstore. It wasn't glamorous, and it didn't make me rich. But it was mine. And that was enough.

Sarah became my best friend. She left the hospital and started working with me at the store.

Mark visited often. He was quiet, kind, and steady. He became something I hadn't expected.

A partner.

One evening, we were sitting on the porch of my new house, watching the sunset.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked.

"I'm thinking about how I almost died," I said. "And how I'm still here."

"That's a good thing."

"I know. I just... I spent so long being afraid of my family. Of what they could do to me. And now I'm free."

Mark took my hand.

"You earned that freedom."

I smiled.

"I'm glad you were there."

"Me too."

We sat in silence, watching the stars come out.

And I felt, for the first time in my life, like I belonged.

Not to a family.

May you like

Not to a legacy.

But to myself.
