CHAPTER 7: THE BOARDROOM

CHAPTER 7: THE BOARDROOM

Two days later, I walked into the Holloway Select Markets corporate headquarters.

Grant was there. Margaret was there. So were the board members, the lawyers, and the investors who had just discovered their money was gone.

They looked like people who had just been told their house was on fire.

"Evelyn," Grant said, his voice tight. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm here to take what's mine."

"This is a private meeting."

"Actually, it's not. I own the building. I own the land. I own half the board seats. And I own every single one of the mortgages you've been carrying."

The board members exchanged glances.

"Is this true?" one of them asked.

I pulled out a folder and set it on the table.

"Everything you need to know is in here. Your company is insolvent. Your assets are being liquidated. And your family's name is about to become synonymous with fraud."

Margaret stood up.

"You can't do this!"

"I can. And I will."

Grant looked at me with pure hatred.

"What do you want? Money? I'll give you money."

"I don't want your money. I already have more than enough. What I want is simple."

"Name it."

I leaned forward.

"Hannah gets full custody of Madeline. You get zero visitation. You and your mother sign over every asset you own. And you stay away from us forever."

Grant's face was white.

"You can't take my daughter."

"I'm not taking her. I'm taking everything else. You can have her back if you give up everything."

"You're insane."

"Maybe. But I'm also the only thing standing between you and bankruptcy. So choose wisely."

He looked at Margaret. She was crying now, her perfect makeup ruined.

"Do it," she whispered. "Sign whatever she wants."

Grant hesitated.

Then he picked up the pen and signed every single page.

When he was finished, I took the papers and stood.

May you like

"Goodbye, Grant. I hope you enjoy your life. You won't have much of it left."

I walked out of the room, leaving them in silence.
