CHAPTER 12: THE REBUILDING
Hannah started working at the diner full-time.
She was good at it. She was kind, efficient, and everyone loved her.
But she wanted to do more.
"Mom," she said one night, "I want to start a foundation. For women who've been abused. To help them escape, start over, and rebuild their lives."
I looked at her.
"That's a beautiful idea."
"I want to call it Carter's Table. In honor of you."
I felt tears sting my eyes.
"Really?"
"Really. You gave me everything. Now I want to give back."
We worked together to launch the foundation. It was slow at first, but then the stories started coming. Women who had been trapped in abusive relationships. Women who had been silenced by their families. Women who had been told they were nothing.
Carter's Table Foundation gave them legal help, housing, counseling, and a chance to start over.
And I realized that this was what I had been building toward all along.
Not just a diner.
