CHAPTER 14: THE TRUTH

CHAPTER 14: THE TRUTH

A year later, Hannah and I were sitting in the living room of her new house when she asked me the question I'd been dreading.

"Mom, what happened to my father? The real one? Not Grant—the father who died when I was seven."

I set down my coffee.

"I've been waiting for you to ask."

"Tell me the truth."

I took a deep breath.

"Your father didn't die of an illness, Hannah. He was murdered."

Her face went white.

"What?"

"Your father was a good man. But he had enemies. The Holloways were part of a criminal organization. They were laundering money through legitimate businesses, and your father found out."

"Dad knew about Grant's family?"

"No, Hannah. Not Grant's family. My family."

She stared at me.

"What are you saying?"

"I wasn't always Evelyn Carter. My maiden name was Evelyn Sterling. I was born into a family of criminals. The same criminals your father discovered."

Hannah's hands were shaking.

"You're telling me Dad was killed by your family?"

"I'm telling you the Holloways aren't the only monsters in this story. They're just the ones I could stop. Your real father, Robert Sterling—my brother—is the one who ordered the hit."

Hannah stood up.

"You—you knew? All this time?"

"I knew the moment I met Grant. I knew he was part of the network. I knew his family was connected to mine. That's why I spent twenty-three years building an empire. Not for money. Not for revenge. For protection."

"Protection from what?"

"From them. From my family. From the people who killed your father."

Hannah was crying now.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I was trying to protect you. And I was ashamed."

She walked over to me and took my hand.

"Mom, I don't care about your past. I care about you. You're my mother. You saved me. You're not a monster."

I started crying too.

May you like

"That's the first time anyone's ever said that to me."

"Then I'll say it a hundred more times."
