Chapter 4 — The Man Who Was Erased From My Life

The graduation ceremony was no longer a celebration.
It had become a battlefield.
Five hundred people were watching my family fall apart in real time.
My phone was still in my hand.
One message.
One sentence.
"Your father is coming home."
I looked at Richard Bennett.
The man who had raised me.
The man who had slapped me in front of the entire university.
The man who had spent years telling me I wasn't good enough.
"Who is Daniel Cross?"
My voice cut through the silence.
Nobody answered.
Not my mother.
Not Richard.
Not Ethan.
That was the answer.
My father looked away.
And that hurt more than anything.
Because when someone is innocent...
They fight.
They explain.
They defend themselves.
Richard Bennett did none of those things.
He just stood there.
Like a man watching a secret he buried twenty-two years ago crawl back into the light.
Professor Hughes stepped closer.
"Emily, we need to understand what is happening."
I nodded slowly.
"So do I."
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone watched as I answered.
"Hello?"
For several seconds...
Nothing.
Then a man's voice came through.
A voice I had never heard before.
But somehow...
It felt familiar.
"Emily."
My entire body froze.
"Who is this?"
The man took a deep breath.
"I know today was supposed to be the happiest day of your life."
My eyes moved toward Richard.
"But they turned it into something else."
I whispered:
"Daniel Cross?"
A silence followed.
Then:
"Yes."
The crowd reacted immediately.
Some people recognized the name.
Whispers spread.
"Daniel Cross?"
"The billionaire?"
"He's alive?"
My father suddenly stepped forward.
"Hang up the phone."
I ignored him.
The man continued.
"I watched what happened."
My heart stopped.
"You watched?"
"I was there."
My blood ran cold.
"You were at my graduation?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you come to me?"
The silence on the phone was painful.
"Because your family spent twenty-two years making sure I stayed away."
I looked at Richard.
The anger inside me started burning.
"What did they do?"
Daniel's voice became darker.
"They told me you died."
My breath caught.
"What?"
"They told me your mother lost the baby."
The entire courtyard went silent.
I looked at Claire.
My mother.
The woman who had raised me.
Her face collapsed.
For the first time...
She looked guilty.
Richard grabbed the phone from my hand.
Security immediately stepped between us.
"You have no right to do this."
Richard shouted.
But the voice on speaker answered calmly.
"I have every right."
"Because Emily is my daughter."
The entire courtyard exploded.
People gasped.
Cameras flashed.
And then Daniel said the words that destroyed Richard Bennett completely.
"Richard."
"I know what you did."
My father's face changed.
"What are you talking about?"
"The stolen research."
"The fake documents."
"The money you transferred."
Richard went completely still.
Because that wasn't supposed to be known.
Daniel continued.
"You didn't just steal my company."
"You stole my daughter."
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
Then Professor Hughes looked at me.
"Emily..."
Her voice shook.
"What stolen research?"
I stared at my family.
And for the first time...
I saw them clearly.
Not as parents.
Not as family.
As people who had built their entire lives on a lie.
My father had spent twenty-two years trying to destroy me.
But now I understood why.
I wasn't just his daughter.
May you like
I was the last piece of evidence.
The evidence that could bring him down.
