Chapter 10 — The Courtroom War

id="hyyvzp"
Three weeks later...
The courtroom was packed.
The story that started with a slap at graduation had become the biggest legal battle in the country.
Every news station wanted the same answer.
Was Emily Bennett a victim?
Or was she part of the biggest fraud case in decades?
I sat at the table beside Daniel.
Across from us...
My family.
Richard.
Claire.
And Ethan.
The judge entered.
Everyone stood.
Then the trial began.
The prosecutor walked forward.
"Your Honor, this case is not about money."
"It's about twenty-two years of manipulation."
The defense attorney immediately stood.
"Objection."
The judge nodded.
"Proceed carefully."
The prosecutor continued.
"Emily Bennett was intentionally isolated, financially controlled, and publicly attacked because certain individuals wanted access to her inheritance."
The courtroom watched.
Then the defense played their first attack.
A video.
My graduation.
My father's slap.
His accusation.
The defense lawyer looked at the jury.
"Does this look like a victim?"
"Or does this look like someone hiding something?"
The room became tense.
Then it was my turn.
I walked to the witness stand.
The same place where my family expected me to break.
The lawyer approached.
"Emily, did you ever steal research?"
"No."
"Did you manipulate professors?"
"No."
"Did you fake your achievements?"
"No."
He stepped closer.
"Then why did your own father accuse you?"
I looked at Richard.
Then answered:
"Because he knew the truth would destroy him."
The courtroom went silent.
The lawyer showed documents.
"These records show you benefited from the Cross Foundation."
I nodded.
"Yes."
"And you expect this court to believe you didn't know?"
"I didn't."
"Convenient."
I looked directly at him.
"No."
"Painful."
He frowned.
"Explain."
I took a breath.
"Imagine spending your entire life believing you are worthless..."
"Then discovering the people who told you that were the reason you struggled."
Nobody spoke.
"That isn't convenient."
"That's devastating."
Even the judge looked affected.
Then the prosecutor stood.
"Your Honor, we have one final witness."
The courtroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman walked in.
Older.
Carrying a file.
Daniel stood immediately.
Because he recognized her.
"No..."
The woman looked at him.
"I'm sorry."
Then she looked at me.
"Emily."
"I know who your real father is."
The courtroom exploded.
Because she had one document.
One document that could change everything.
May you like
A birth certificate.
With a name nobody expected.
