Chapter 2 — The Flash Drive My Family Feared

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Five hundred graduates.

Hundreds of parents.

All watching me stand behind the microphone my father never expected me to touch.

Professor Hughes looked nervous.

"Emily..."

Her voice was quiet.

"What exactly are you about to show us?"

I looked at my family.

My father stood frozen.

My mother looked like she had forgotten how to act.

And Ethan...

For the first time in his life...

He looked afraid.

I held up the flash drive.

"This contains everything my family has been trying to hide."

A shock went through the crowd.

My father immediately stepped forward.

"Stop this."

His voice was no longer confident.

It was desperate.

"Emily, think carefully about what you're doing."

I smiled.

"That's the first time you've told me to think carefully."

The audience heard the bitterness in my voice.

Because everyone knew.

This was personal.

My father lowered his voice.

"You don't understand the consequences."

I stared at him.

"No, Dad."

"I understand them better than anyone."

I plugged the flash drive into the laptop connected to the ceremony screen.

The large display behind me turned black.

Then a folder appeared.

The name was simple.

"Bennett Family Evidence."

My mother covered her mouth.

Ethan took a step back.

The crowd noticed.

And that was the first crack.

The first moment they realized...

Maybe I wasn't the villain.

Professor Hughes walked closer.

"Emily, where did you get this?"

I looked at her.

"From my own family."

The first video opened.

A recording appeared.

The date was four years earlier.

My first year of college.

I watched my younger self walking into my father's office.

Then I heard his voice.

"You don't need to finish college."

The crowd became silent.

My father's face turned pale.

The video continued.

My younger voice asked:

"Why?"

My father's answer shocked everyone.

"Because Ethan needs the family resources more than you do."

A gasp came from the audience.

My mother immediately shouted.

"That's taken out of context!"

I turned around.

"Is it?"

I clicked the next file.

Another recording.

Then another.

Bank statements.

Emails.

Messages.

Proof.

Four years of evidence.

My family had spent years telling everyone I was irresponsible.

But the truth was different.

They had secretly drained my college savings.

They had blocked scholarships.

They had contacted professors behind my back.

They tried to make sure I failed.

Because they didn't want me graduating.

They wanted me dependent.

Forever.

My father finally lost control.

"Enough!"

He rushed toward the stage.

Security immediately stepped in.

"Sir, stay back."

He looked at me.

Not like his daughter.

Like an enemy.

"You have no idea what you're destroying."

I looked at him calmly.

"No."

"I know exactly what I'm destroying."

"Your lie."

The crowd erupted.

Whispers became voices.

Voices became anger.

But then...

My mother suddenly smiled.

And that scared me.

Because Claire Bennett only smiled when she had another weapon.

She walked toward the microphone.

"Emily..."

Her voice was soft.

Almost loving.

"You really believe you know the whole story?"

I froze.

She looked at my father.

Then back at me.

"There is something you don't know about your birth."

The entire courtyard went silent again.

My heart stopped.

"What did you say?"

My mother smiled.

"The reason your father never loved you..."

She paused.

"Is because you were never supposed to be his daughter."

The crowd gasped.

My father's eyes widened.

"Claire..."

But she continued.

And then she said the words that changed everything.

May you like

"Emily..."

"Your real father is still alive."
