The courtroom was silent.
The woman placed the document on the table.
The judge looked down.
"Explain."
The woman took a deep breath.
"My name is Laura Hayes."
"I worked at the hospital where Emily was born."
My hands tightened.
"The night Emily was born..."
She looked at Claire.
"Everything changed."
My mother lowered her head.
Laura continued.
"The original birth records were replaced."
The prosecutor asked:
"By whom?"
Laura looked at Richard.
Then Claire.
"By orders from Thomas Bennett."
The courtroom erupted.
The judge slammed the gavel.
"Order!"
Laura continued.
"The child was never supposed to disappear."
"She was supposed to be protected."
"But someone changed the documents."
I whispered:
"Who was my father?"
Laura looked at me.
And finally said:
"His name was Michael Hayes."
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked shocked.
Richard looked terrified.
Because he knew the name.
Michael Hayes.
The scientist who created the original medical research.
The man whose discovery started everything.
The man Richard claimed stole from Daniel.
The truth was unbelievable.
My bloodline connected three powerful families.
Cross.
Bennett.
Hayes.
And all three had been fighting over me.
Not because I was a person.
Because I was valuable.
The judge ordered an immediate investigation.
The courtroom became chaos.
News cameras surrounded the courthouse.
And outside...
Richard Bennett finally broke.
"I never wanted this."
I looked at him.
"Yes, you did."
"No."
He shook his head.
"I wanted power."
"But Thomas..."
His voice cracked.
"Thomas wanted control."
I stared.
"What do you mean?"
Richard whispered:
"He wasn't trying to steal your inheritance."
"He was trying to destroy the evidence that you existed."
My blood ran cold.
"Why?"
Richard looked at me.
"Because your real father discovered something."
"What?"
Richard swallowed.
"He discovered a cure."
The room went silent.
"A cure for what?"
Richard looked terrified.
"A disease that killed your grandfather."
"The same disease they believed you inherited."
Then he whispered:
"But you didn't."
May you like
"You survived."
"And that's why they were afraid."
