Chapter 9 - The Archive Fire

The courthouse archive alarm sounded before we arrived.

Smoke poured from a basement vent.

Firefighters evacuated the building.

Preston had started a fire.

He had also underestimated government redundancy.

The DNA report had been scanned.

The scan proved Noah was Preston’s biological son.

But Evelyn’s trust contained another surprise.

It did not disinherit Noah.

It protected him.

If Grant was not his father, Claire became trustee while Noah remained primary beneficiary.

Grant would receive nothing.

Preston would receive nothing.

The child they had nearly killed still inherited.

The adults lost control.

That was Evelyn’s design.

Preston was arrested two days later at a private airfield.

He had a fake passport.

Cash.

And the bicycle courier’s missing phone.

The video survived.

It showed the fifth-floor window.

Ashley entered the nursery.

Grant attacked her.

Vanessa grabbed Noah.

Grant shoved Ashley into the hallway.

Then he took Noah.

For three seconds, Grant held the baby outside the window.

A thin safety line was visible.

Then the line snapped.

Noah fell.

My body entered the frame below.

I caught him.

The video ended.

I watched it once.

Never again.

The public narrative reversed overnight.

The man called reckless became the person who prevented a planned fraud from becoming a child’s death.

I received interview requests.

I declined all of them.

Noah did not need another circus.

Grant remained missing.

That worried Ortiz more than Preston.

“He has no money.”

“Then he’s desperate.”

“Exactly.”

Claire received temporary guardianship.

Noah moved into her home under protection.

Ashley visited daily.

I returned to work.

Or tried.

Every time I passed a tall building, I looked up.

Every time a child cried, my arms remembered the impact.

Then a package arrived at my office.

No return address.

Inside was the heavy metal wrench I had used to smash a car window years earlier during an unrelated rescue training drill.

Except it was not mine.

It was a message.

Taped to the wrench was a photograph of Claire holding Noah.

On the back, Grant had written:

YOU CAUGHT HIM ONCE.

TRY AGAIN.

I called Ortiz.

Before she answered, the fire alarm in my building began to ring.

Everyone moved toward the exits.

My phone buzzed.

A live video appeared.

Claire’s house.

A masked man was standing inside Noah’s nursery.

And Grant’s voice whispered through the speaker.

May you like

“Heroes always run toward danger.”
