Chapter 8 - The Trade

Claire agreed to the meeting.
Police wired her.
Grant chose an abandoned railway depot.
He ordered her to bring proof that she had renounced all rights under Evelynâs trust.
Claire carried forged documents prepared by investigators.
I was told to stay away.
I did not.
Ortiz found me in the surveillance van.
âIf you get out, I arrest you.â
âFine.â
She glared.
âAfter.â
Claire entered the depot.
Grant stood beside a van.
Noah was inside.
Vanessa stood near him.
She looked exhausted.
Preston was nowhere in sight.
Grant demanded the papers.
Claire demanded Noah.
âYou first.â
âNo.â
They argued.
Then Vanessa moved.
She opened the van door.
She grabbed Noah.
Grant shouted.
Vanessa ran toward Claire.
A gunshot cracked.
Vanessa fell.
Claire caught Noah.
Police stormed the depot.
Grant fled through a maintenance tunnel.
The shooter was not Grant.
The shot came from a distant roof.
Preston Vale.
He escaped before officers reached the position.
Vanessa survived.
The bullet passed through her shoulder.
At the hospital, she asked for immunity.
Ortiz made no promises.
Vanessa told everything.
Grant had abused her for years.
That did not erase her participation.
She admitted helping stage the window scene.
She admitted lying in court.
She admitted allowing the lawsuit.
âWhy?â
âBecause Grant said if I didnât, heâd make Noah disappear.â
Ashley stared at her.
âYou watched him hurt your son before that.â
Vanessa cried.
âI was afraid.â
Ashleyâs voice turned hard.
âSo was Noah.â
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
Then she gave investigators the final secret.
Preston was not simply Grantâs lawyer.
He was Noahâs biological father.
The room went silent.
Grant had discovered the affair during Vanessaâs pregnancy.
He agreed to raise Noah because Evelynâs trust required a Caldwell descendant.
But after Evelyn learned the truth, she ordered a private DNA test.
She planned to change the trust again.
She died before she could.
Grant hated Noah.
Preston wanted the money attached to him.
Vanessa was trapped between two men who saw her child as an asset.
Ortiz asked where Preston would go.
Vanessa answered immediately.
âTo the courthouse archive.â
âWhy?â
âEvelynâs original DNA report is there.â
If Preston destroyed it, he could still claim Noah was Grantâs biological child.
Claire frowned.
âWhy does that matter now?â
Vanessa looked at her.
âBecause the trust has a clause nobody knows about.â
âWhat clause?â
âIf Noah isnât Grantâs son, the entire fortune passes to Claire.â
May you like
And somewhere across the city, Preston Vale was running toward the one document worth sixty million dollars.
Â
