Chapter 5 - The Dead Sister

Claire Caldwell was alive.
She had spent twelve years believing her family wanted nothing to do with her.
Grant had told everyone she died from an overdose.
Claire said Grant had paid for a false death certificate after she exposed him stealing from their mother.
Evelyn secretly found Claire three years later.
They reconciled in private.
Evelyn then rewrote the trust.
Claire was named successor trustee if Grant ever endangered Noah.
That was why Grant needed Claire to remain legally dead.
Claire had received Ashleyâs backup package because June forwarded it.
She came immediately.
âI should have come sooner.â
June hugged her.
âYou came when you knew.â
Claire watched the nursery videos.
When she saw Grant discussing Noahâs disability, her hands shook.
âHe did this to Mom too.â
Detective Ortiz looked up.
âWhat?â
Claire believed Evelynâs fatal fall down a staircase had not been accidental.
Grant had been alone with her.
He inherited almost nothing directly.
But he gained temporary access to family properties and records.
That access let him hide financial theft before the trust audit.
Police reopened Evelynâs death.
The civil lawsuit against me collapsed publicly.
Preston Vale withdrew it.
Too late.
The judge had already referred his conduct to the bar and prosecutors.
I should have been free to walk away.
But Noah was still in protective custody.
Ashley was still being threatened.
And a family had spent weeks turning a rescue into a weapon.
I needed to know why.
Claire petitioned to become Noahâs temporary guardian.
Grant fought it.
He produced Claireâs fake death certificate as proof she was an impostor.
Then he produced something worse.
A DNA test claiming Claire was not Evelynâs daughter.
Claire laughed when she saw it.
âHe forged it.â
Maybe.
But the laboratory was legitimate.
Detective Ortiz contacted them.
The sample had been submitted by Preston Vale.
The chain of custody listed a hospital nurse.
The nurse denied ever collecting it.
Someone had used her credentials.
The same nurse had treated Noah after the fall.
That connection frightened Ortiz.
She subpoenaed hospital access logs.
Someone had opened Noahâs chart seventeen times after discharge.
The user account belonged to a pediatric resident named Dr. Caleb Morris.
He had no reason to access it.
Police went to his apartment.
He was gone.
On his kitchen table they found cash.
A passport.
And a handwritten note.
I DIDNâT KNOW THEY WOULD THROW HIM.
That was the first time anyone used the word throw.
Until then, even Ashley believed Noah had slipped during the struggle.
Now we had to consider something worse.
Someone may have deliberately sent a baby out a fifth-floor window.
May you like
And whoever did it knew I had been standing below.
