Chapter 9 - Vanessa Was Not the First Woman Chosen

I confronted Arthur in his own boardroom.
Not as his daughter-in-law.
As the woman who now controlled fifty-one percent of his company.
He hated the difference.
“Who designed the compatibility strategy?”
Arthur looked at the old photograph.
“Reginald Vale.”
“Why?”
“Hart analytics. Blackwood distribution. Vale political access. Three families. One machine.”
Lucas leaned against the wall.
“You make conspiracy sound like a merger deck.”
Arthur ignored him.
“Your father backed out.”
“So Reginald killed him?”
“I don’t know.”
Lucas stepped forward.
“You were in the room.”
“After.”
“Convenient.”
Arthur’s face hardened. “Your father called me because he was afraid of Reginald. I arrived and found Henry on the floor. Reginald told me if I called the police, Julian would be implicated in financial fraud.”
“Was Julian involved?” I asked.
“No.”
“Did you believe Reginald?”
“Yes.”
“So you helped cover a death to protect your son.”
Arthur looked at me. “You are a mother. Tell me you would not burn the world for Penny.”
“I would burn myself first.”
He looked away.
Then Marcus found another folder.
VALE MATCH.
Vanessa’s profile appeared beside Julian’s.
She had been the first planned match.
Not me.
“Reginald wanted his daughter to marry Julian,” I said.
Arthur nodded.
“Henry opposed it. He believed Vanessa was being used.”
Lucas frowned. “Then why switch to Evelyn?”
Arthur gave me a tired look.
“Because Henry made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“He told Reginald that the Hart voting trust could only pass through direct family control.”
I understood.
If I married Julian, Blackwood could gain access to Hart influence.
If Vanessa married Julian, Vale could gain Blackwood.
I had not entered a love triangle.
I had entered a succession war designed before any of us knew what marriage meant.
My phone buzzed.
Vanessa.
One message.
YOU THINK I WANTED YOUR HUSBAND?
Arthur poured himself water before answering my questions.
His hand shook against the glass.
I had never seen Arthur Blackwood’s hand shake.
For eleven years, he had treated emotion like something servants cleaned after dinner.
“Did you ever like me?” I asked.
He looked surprised.
It was not the question he expected from the new majority owner.
“Yes.”
“Did that make any difference?”
“Less than it should have.”
I believed him.
Arthur admitted he had watched Julian fall in love with me and decided that love made the arrangement acceptable.
“That is what cowards do,” I said. “We rename what benefits us.”
He did not argue.
“What did Henry think of Julian?”
“He thought Julian was insecure.”
I almost laughed.
“Dad never met him.”
“He studied him.”
Of course he did.
Henry Hart could quantify a person’s weakness before offering them dinner.
Arthur added, “Your father believed insecurity was safer than ambition.”
“And he was wrong.”
“Yes.”
That answer landed harder than another defense.
The people who built this trap were not omniscient masterminds.
They were parents making arrogant predictions about their children and calling those predictions strategy.
The conspiracy was terrifying partly because it was human.
A second arrived.
I WAS SENT TO BREAK YOUR MARRIAGE BEFORE JULIAN FOUND OUT WHY HE MARRIED YOU.
