Chapter 3 - Someone Had Been Using My Name

By two in the morning, Penny and I were in a private hospital suite under a name that was not mine.
The doctor documented every bruise. A child advocate photographed Penny’s wrists. A detective from outside Lake County took my statement because Marcus did not trust the local department.
I hated needing Marcus to arrange any of it.
Dependence had always scared me more than poverty.
Julian called nineteen times.
I blocked him after the third.
At 2:17, Vanessa texted me.
I’m sorry it got out of hand.
I stared at the message until my hands shook.
Out of hand.
As if thirty strikes were a spilled drink.
Marcus entered carrying coffee and a laptop.
“Penny asleep?”
“Finally.”
He sat across from me.
“The transfer wasn’t forged in the normal sense. It used your old Hart Meridian signing certificate.”
“That certificate was destroyed when I left.”
“That’s what I believed.”
“Where did the money go?”
“Three entities. Delaware. Luxembourg. Singapore.”
“Beneficial owner?”
He hesitated.
“Still tracing.”
I studied him. “You know more.”
Marcus had taught me how to negotiate when I was twenty-four. Silence was his favorite weapon.
I used it on him now.
He lost.
“There was a second authorization.”
“Whose?”
He turned the laptop.
LUCAS HART.
My younger brother’s name looked impossible on the screen.
Lucas had been brilliant, funny, impossible to manage, and addicted to anything that let him disappear from himself. After Dad died, he spiraled harder. Rehab. Relapse. Rehab again.
Nine years ago, he vanished from a treatment center in Arizona.
Marcus told us Lucas did not want contact.
My mother died believing that.
“You told me you couldn’t find him.”
“I couldn’t.”
“The transfer was signed three hours ago.”
“I see that.”
I stood too fast and pain tore across my ribs.
“Where is my brother?”
“I don’t know.”
“Stop saying that.”
“I am not lying.”
I pointed at the screen. “Then somebody is using both our identities.”
Marcus looked troubled.
“Maybe.”
“What does that mean?”
He enlarged a metadata panel.
The signature had been validated by a biometric key.
Heartbeat pattern.
Retinal confirmation.
Voice match.
A level of authentication Hart Meridian only used for principals.
I sat back down.
“So Lucas signed it.”
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Or someone has access to Lucas that should be impossible.”
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A photo appeared.
Julian stood outside the hospital entrance with flowers.
The picture had been taken less than thirty seconds earlier.
Below it was a message.
DON’T LET YOUR HUSBAND COME UPSTAIRS.
Then a second.
I spent the next hour rebuilding my old signing history from memory.
Not because Marcus asked.
Because I needed to know whether the person using my name understood me or merely possessed my credentials.
My signatures had patterns. I approved high-risk transfers in the afternoon, never first thing in the morning. I used short authorization notes when I trusted the counterparty and full paragraphs when I did not. On quarter-end days, I double-checked currency conversions by hand even when the system had already done it.
The forty-seven-million-dollar transfer carried a six-word note.
Execute under preapproved liquidity corridor.
I would never write that.
“Why?” Marcus asked.
“Because ‘preapproved’ is a word people use when they want you to stop asking who approved something.”
He almost smiled.
Penny woke long enough to ask for water. I helped her drink and watched her fall asleep again with one fist closed around the blanket.
“I left finance because I thought family was the one place I didn’t have to audit people,” I said.
Marcus leaned back.
“Families fail audits too.”
“Did mine?”
His eyes moved toward the laptop.
“Your father believed trust without verification was just a slower form of risk.”
I hated hearing Henry Hart in every sentence Marcus spoke.
I hated more that Dad was usually right after it was too late to be useful.
HE ISN’T HERE TO APOLOGIZE.
HE’S HERE TO FIND LUCAS.
