Chapter 11 - Marcus Had Been Lying Since My Father Died

I called Penny’s room.

No answer.

Lucas called his security team.

They were already moving.

We reached the hospital in nine minutes.

Penny was safe.

Marcus was gone.

So was Henry Hart’s archive drive.

I stood in the empty room and felt something colder than panic.

Recognition.

Marcus had always been the person I called when everything broke.

That made him the one person who always knew where the pieces were.

Lucas kicked the wall.

“I should have seen it.”

“Seen what?”

“He found me after rehab.”

I turned.

“What?”

“Marcus gave me the first files on Dad. He told me staying away from you was the only way to keep Reginald from using you.”

“So he separated us.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Lucas looked sick.

“Maybe because together we could open the full archive.”

A nurse approached with an envelope.

“Mr. Reed asked me to give you this if he left.”

Inside was a handwritten note.

EVELYN — I DID NOT TAKE THE DRIVE FOR REGINALD. I TOOK IT FROM HIM.

Below that:

YOUR FATHER DID NOT CREATE THE HART PROTOCOL TO PROTECT YOU FROM BLACKWOOD.

HE CREATED IT TO PROTECT BLACKWOOD FROM YOU.

I read it twice.

Lucas frowned. “What the hell does that mean?”

There was one more line.

ASK YOURSELF WHY HENRY HART MADE HIS MOST AGGRESSIVE CHILD THE BENEFICIAL OWNER OF A COMPANY SHE DID NOT KNOW SHE OWNED.

I sat down.

My father had trusted my judgment.

Hadn’t he?

Then I remembered something from my last year on Wall Street.

A risk model I built for hostile takeover defense.

It was theoretical. Elegant. Brutal.

Dad had asked for a copy.

Six months later, I left finance.

“What if Hart Meridian is built on my model?” I whispered.

Lucas stared.

“Evie.”

“What if Dad used my work to create the debt structure controlling Blackwood?”

“Without telling you?”

“Yes.”

My phone buzzed.

Marcus sent one file before disappearing.

The creation document for Hart Meridian.

Penny did not understand why Marcus disappearing frightened me.

“He’s old,” she said. “Maybe he went home.”

I almost smiled.

“Maybe.”

She returned to drawing.

Lucas watched her from the doorway.

“Do you trust him?” I asked.

“Marcus?”

“Yes.”

“I trust that he believes he’s protecting us.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“No.”

Lucas sat beside me.

“After rehab, Marcus was the first person who gave me a job that wasn’t fake charity. He made me analyze distressed debt because he knew numbers calmed me down.”

“Did he tell you that Northstar could become this?”

“He told me I was either going to build something or spend the rest of my life apologizing for breaking things.”

That sounded like Marcus.

It was possible for a person to save one part of your life and damage another.

That ambiguity made betrayal harder to categorize.

I looked through Marcus’s old emails and found hundreds of messages to Mom he had never shown me.

Updates about Lucas.

He is sober.

He is working.

He asked about Evelyn.

Mom had replied to every one.

Tell him I love him.

My throat closed.

Marcus had carried our family’s messages in both directions and still refused to reconnect us.

Protection had become possession.

I was done allowing that distinction to blur.

Architect: EVELYN HART.

My signature was at the bottom.
