Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Took Penny

My brain stopped working for exactly two seconds.
Then Evelyn Hart returned.
“Which exit?”
The advocate blinked. “What?”
“Which exit did she use?”
“We don’t know.”
“Cameras.”
Lucas was already moving.
The hospital security system showed Penny walking calmly down a service hall beside a woman in blue scrubs.
Penny was not struggling.
That terrified me more.
“She knew her,” I said.
Lucas froze the frame.
The woman turned toward the camera.
Vanessa.
My anger was so clean it felt like ice.
“She took my daughter.”
Julian called before I could call him.
“Penny is with me.”
I nearly dropped the phone.
“Put her on.”
“Mommy?” Penny’s voice came through.
I closed my eyes.
“Baby, are you okay?”
“Yes. Daddy said Vanessa was helping me hide.”
“Give him the phone.”
Julian returned.
“Vanessa brought her to my office. She said men were coming for Penny.”
“She is the danger.”
“I know.”
“Then why is she still breathing in the same building as my child?”
Lucas raised one eyebrow.
Julian exhaled. “Because she left before I understood what happened.”
“Bring Penny to the hospital.”
“I can’t.”
My blood went cold.
“What?”
“Dad’s security team sealed the building.”
Lucas grabbed the phone. “Put Arthur on.”
A pause.
Arthur’s voice came through.
“Lucas Hart.”
“Open the doors.”
“You have become exactly what your father feared.”
Lucas smiled without humor. “And you became exactly what he predicted.”
“Enough theater,” I said. “Why are you holding my daughter?”
Arthur’s voice softened.
“Because Reginald Vale believes Penny has something Henry left behind.”
I looked at Lucas.
“What could Penny have?”
“I don’t know.”
Arthur continued.
“Your father created a final encryption key before he died. He called it the Hart Child Key.”
My stomach turned.
“Penny wasn’t born yet.”
“No,” Arthur said.
When Penny came back, I made everyone leave the room except the child advocate.
Lucas argued.
I stared at him until he stopped.
Then I knelt in front of my daughter.
“Did Vanessa scare you?”
Penny shook her head.
“She said bad men were coming.”
“Did she tell you not to tell me?”
“She said you were sleeping.”
I closed my eyes for one second.
Vanessa understood children well enough to weaponize reassurance.
“Did Daddy know she was taking you?”
“No. She said Daddy asked.”
Another lie layered over another adult’s authority.
Penny touched my cheek carefully.
“Are you still hurt?”
“A little.”
“Is Daddy going to jail?”
The question came so softly I nearly broke.
“I don’t know.”
“Do you want him to?”
I could have given her a simple answer.
Instead I said, “I want the grown-ups to tell the truth about what happened. Then people whose job is to decide consequences will decide.”
She nodded.
“Can I still love him?”
“Yes.”
That answer hurt most.
Children should never be forced to choose loyalty as evidence.
When Lucas came back in, I told him the same thing I told myself.
“No one uses Penny to win this.”
His expression hardened.
“Agreed.”
“For anything.”
“Agreed.”
That promise would matter later.
Then he said the sentence that changed the shape of the entire conspiracy.
“The child Henry meant was you.”
