Chapter 4: The Truth Inside the System

The doctor stepped forward.

“What is going on here?”

My husband tilted his head.

“You shouldn’t have brought him here.”

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand…”

He slowly walked down the stairs.

And said:

“I wasn’t sick.”

A pause.

“I was selected.”

My breath caught.

“For what?”

He looked at me.

Then at the doctor.

And answered:

“For replacement testing.”

Silence.

The doctor’s face went pale.

“No…”

My husband nodded.

“They were going to declare me dead anyway.”

He tapped his chest.

“Conditioned heart failure induction. Controlled environment test.”

My hands started shaking.

“What test?”

He smiled slightly.

“To see if someone can be erased without resistance.”

The room felt like it was collapsing inward.

The doctor whispered:

“This isn’t legal…”

My husband laughed softly.

“Nothing about this was legal.”

Then he looked at me.

And said the sentence that broke everything:

“You didn’t marry me.”

May you like

A pause.

“You signed for me.”
