Sirens suddenly echoed outside.
Not police.
Not ambulance.
Black vehicles.
Surrounding the house.
The doctor stepped back.
“What did you do?”
My husband didn’t move.
He just looked at me.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
“I told you not to open it.”
I shook my head.
“What happens now?”
He stepped closer.
And whispered:
“Now they decide if I stay human…”

“…or become property again.”
The windows went dark.
Blocking signal.
The doors locked automatically.
And a voice came through the house speakers:
“SUBJECT CONFIRMED ACTIVE.”
“INITIATE RECOVERY PROTOCOL.”
My husband closed his eyes.
And said softly:
“Now you understand.”
I whispered:
“Understand what?”
He opened his eyes.
And looked at me one last time.
“That the coffin wasn’t meant to bury me.”
“It was meant to wake me up.”
