Chapter 5 - Things I Had Called Normal

My first wife, Emma, had been dead for two years when I met Claire.

Noah was three then. He still called every yellow butterfly “Mommy’s butterfly” because Emma had once embroidered one on his baby blanket.

Claire had cried when I told her.

I mistook that for kindness.

Now I stood in our bedroom holding the cracked photograph, trying to remember when kindness had become rules.

No toys downstairs.

No interruptions during adult conversations.

No crying over things that couldn’t be changed.

I’d challenged some of it.

Then Claire would soften.

“I’m trying to help him grow, Daniel. You’re grieving. Sometimes you can’t see clearly.”

And because that sentence contained one painful truth, I had accepted the rest.

I found Bear at the bottom of the bag.

One ear was damp.

I photographed everything before taking it out.

Downstairs, headlights swept across the living room wall.

Claire came through the front door with Vivian behind her.

Her veil was gone. So were the tears.

“You left me standing there,” she said.

I held up the bag.

“What is this?”

“Clutter.”

“His mother’s blanket?”

“He needs to move forward.”

“He’s four.”

“And I’m your wife.”

I looked at the woman I had brought into my son’s home.

“Did you lock him in that room?”

She folded her arms.

“I gave him time to calm down.”

“Did you lock the door?”

“He was out of control.”

“Answer me.”

“Yes,” she snapped. “For a few minutes.”

Vivian stepped forward.

“Daniel, parents discipline children.”

“She isn’t his parent.”

The words landed hard.

Claire stared at me.

“After everything I’ve done?”

I set the bag on the dining table.

“You need to pack what you need for tonight. You’re not staying here with him.”

“This is my home now.”

“I’ll have a lawyer handle access to the house. Right now, I need distance.”

She pulled out her phone.

“Fine. Call your lawyer. I have proof your precious little boy isn’t as innocent as you think.”

Then she turned the screen toward me.

A video showed Noah sitting on the laundry room floor.

Crying.

While Claire filmed him through the doorway.
