Chapter 11 - The Woman at the Door

I sat at the kitchen table with the drawing until Rachel took it gently from my hands.

“Come on,” she said. “We’ve got things to do.”

We replaced the cracked photo frame.

We put Emma’s blanket back on Noah’s bed.

We moved every cleaning product into a locked cabinet and left the laundry room door open.

I didn’t know whether Noah would want to come home soon. I wanted him to have that choice.

At four, the doorbell rang.

Vivian stood on the porch.

Alone.

“I’m not here to fight.”

“Send anything you need to say through Leah.”

“Five minutes.”

Rachel appeared behind me.

Vivian looked older without the makeup she’d worn at the wedding.

“My daughter has made mistakes.”

I waited.

“She’s willing to apologize to Noah.”

“He doesn’t owe her an audience.”

“I didn’t say he did.”

But she had come expecting one.

She held out an envelope.

Inside was a check made out to me.

Enough to cover much of the wedding.

I put it back.

“What is this?”

“An attempt to let everyone move on.”

“Does everyone include Noah?”

Her mouth tightened.

“You have the video. We understand that.”

“And the room?”

“Claire says you’re exaggerating.”

I looked at her for a long moment.

Then I took out my phone and played the short video Claire had sent that morning after Leah requested it.

She still believed it would prove she had been reasonable.

On the screen, Noah whispered, “Till I’m good.”

Vivian’s face changed.

She reached for the porch railing.

For the first time, she had nothing ready to say.

“Your daughter did that,” I told her. “Then she filmed it.”

Vivian looked toward the street.

“I told her children need firm boundaries.”

“This is what she did with that.”

She left without the envelope.

That night, Claire sent one message.

You turned my own mother against me.

I showed it to Leah.

Then I put my phone away.

In the living room, Noah stood at the edge of the rug.

“Is she upstairs?”

“No.”

“Can you check?”

I took his hand.

“We’ll check together.”

At the top of the stairs, he suddenly stopped.

May you like

His bedroom door was open.

But he wouldn’t go inside.
