Chapter 1 - THE CALL HE LET ME MAKE

My husband handed me the phone because he wanted to hear my father beg.

Five minutes later, he was the one begging.

But first, there was the floor.

Cold marble against my cheek. A riding crop beside Adrian’s shoe. Vanessa on the sofa, champagne trembling in her glass—not because she was frightened, but because she was laughing.

“Two hundred,” she said. “You actually made me count all the way to two hundred.”

Adrian loosened his collar.

“Maybe next time she’ll watch her mouth.”

I hadn’t said anything.

That was the part I needed to remember. Later, when they tried to tell me I had started it, that I had threatened her, that I had somehow earned what happened beneath our wedding chandelier.

I had looked at Vanessa.

She had decided she didn’t like how.

“Apologize,” she said.

I moved my fingers against the marble, checking whether they still belonged to me.

“May I use my phone?”

Adrian stared, then laughed.

“Calling Daddy?”

He picked it up from the console and crouched just far enough away that I couldn’t touch him.

“What’s the number? Maybe your retired accountant can explain how marriage works.”

“My phone,” I whispered. “Please.”

He dropped it beside my hand.

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Put it on speaker. I could use something funny.”

My father answered immediately.

“Evelyn?”

One word nearly undid me.

I pressed the speaker button.

“Dad. Do exactly what you warned me you would.”

The room went quiet.

“Where are you?”

“Living room.”

“Is Adrian there?”

“Yes.”

My father took one breath.

“Listen carefully. Help is already on the way. Don’t try to stand.”

Adrian’s smile shifted.

“Who the hell do you think you’re talking to?”

“My daughter.”

Something in my father’s voice made Vanessa put down her glass.

Adrian reached for the phone.

I closed my hand around it.

For years, I had mistaken his confidence for power. That night, I saw how quickly it thinned when someone failed to be afraid.

Headlights swept across the windows.

Then more.

Adrian turned toward the driveway.

“What did you do?”

I touched the diamond pendant resting against my chest.

His eyes followed my fingers.

The recorder inside had captured everything.

The counting.

The threats.

His voice.

Vanessa’s instructions.

A fist struck the front door.

“Police! Open the door!”

Adrian looked back at me, suddenly pale.

“Evelyn. Tell them this was a misunderstanding.”

May you like

I watched his hand close around the riding crop.

And for one terrible second, I thought he intended to use it again.
