Chapter 5 - The Dead Lawyer

Richard Vale had represented Ethan's father for thirty years.

Official records showed he died after a stroke.

But investigators discovered something shocking.

The death certificate was fraudulent.

Richard had disappeared.

And he had continued operating through offshore accounts.

His goal was simple.

Control the Whitmore fortune.

Lucas had debts.

Carter had greed.

Vanessa had fear.

Richard had manipulated all three.

But there was one person he hadn't anticipated.

Grace.

Because Grace remembered something.

The night of the pool incident, before the stroller went into the water, she had seen a man standing near the gate.

He wore an old-fashioned silver watch.

She described it.

Ethan went pale.

“My father gave that watch to Richard.”

Marcus immediately ordered a search.

They found Richard's car abandoned outside Charlotte.

Inside was a file.

It contained photographs of Noah.

Photographs of Ethan.

Photographs of Grace.

And one photograph of the entire Whitmore estate.

On the back:

THE STAFF MEMBER IS THE VARIABLE.

Grace read it.

Her hands shook.

“I was part of the plan.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

“They were watching me.”

“Because you saw too much.”

Grace looked at him.

“Why me?”

“Because you saved my son.”

Marcus found a location hidden inside the file.

An abandoned country club.

Police surrounded it.

Richard was there.

So was Carter.

Lucas was there too.

The confrontation lasted less than ten minutes.

Richard tried to escape.

He failed.

Carter surrendered.

Lucas broke down.

“I didn't know they would hurt Noah.”

Ethan stared at him.

“You helped plan it.”

“I wanted the money.”

“You helped plan the murder of your nephew.”

Lucas cried.

“I know.”

Ethan turned away.

He couldn't forgive him.

Not yet.

But the biggest revelation came from Richard.

He confessed to everything.

The trust.

The inheritance clause.

The forged documents.

The manipulation.

And the reason Noah had been targeted.

“If Noah died,” Richard said, “Lucas would become trustee.”

“And then?” Marcus asked.

Richard smiled.

“I would control Lucas.”

Ethan finally understood.

The pool had never been about Grace.

It had never been about Vanessa.

It had never even been about Noah personally.

It was about power.

Money.

Control.

And a fortune worth hundreds of millions.

But Richard made one mistake.

He underestimated the person who had jumped into the pool without thinking.

Grace.
