Chapter 2 - The Woman Everyone Blamed

By midnight, the Whitmore estate had transformed into a crime scene.

Police cars filled the driveway.

Security guards stood around the pool.

Paramedics examined Noah.

Grace sat wrapped in a gray emergency blanket, still shivering.

She couldn't stop replaying the moment in her head.

The stroller.

The blue dress.

The splash.

The baby's terrified face.

And Vanessa's accusation.

A detective approached.

“Ms. Miller?”

Grace looked up.

“Yes.”

“I'm Detective Marcus Reed.”

He sat across from her.

“I need you to tell me exactly what happened.”

Grace explained everything.

She told him where she had been.

What she heard.

How she entered the water.

How she freed Noah.

Marcus listened carefully.

Then he asked,

“Did you touch the stroller before it entered the water?”

“No.”

“Did you see Ms. Cole push it?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Grace hesitated.

“I don't know.”

Marcus studied her.

“You're certain?”

“Yes.”

Across the room, Vanessa sat beside Ethan.

She looked devastated.

But Grace noticed something strange.

Vanessa wasn't looking at Noah.

She was looking at the security office.

Waiting.

Ten minutes later, the security manager returned.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

Ethan stood.

“Do you have the backup?”

“Yes.”

“Play it.”

The manager connected the device to a monitor.

Everyone gathered.

The recording began at 11:39 p.m.

The pool area appeared empty.

Then Vanessa entered the frame.

She pushed the stroller.

Grace's heart stopped.

Vanessa looked around.

She moved closer to the pool.

Then she stopped.

The room became silent.

Vanessa looked directly toward the camera.

She knew where it was.

Then she pushed the stroller.

The wheels rolled forward.

The stroller tipped.

And disappeared into the pool.

Grace covered her mouth.

Nobody spoke.

The recording continued.

Vanessa didn't jump.

She didn't scream.

She simply stood there.

Waiting.

Then she looked toward the house.

Only afterward did Grace appear in the frame.

Running.

Marcus paused the footage.

Everyone turned toward Vanessa.

Ethan looked devastated.

“Why?”

Vanessa began crying.

“I panicked.”

“You pushed my son into a pool.”

“I didn't mean for him to fall!”

“You watched him sink!”

“I thought someone would come!”

“You waited!”

Vanessa covered her face.

Grace stared at her.

Something still didn't make sense.

Why would she do it?

Marcus asked the question.

“Ms. Cole, why did you push the stroller?”

Vanessa didn't answer.

Then Ethan said,

“Answer him.”

She looked at him.

“I was angry.”

“At who?”

Vanessa's eyes moved toward Grace.

“At her.”

Grace froze.

“What?”

Vanessa pointed.

“She had been trying to get close to you.”

Grace stared.

“I work here.”

“You were always around Noah.”

“Because I was assigned to the nursery.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“You wanted my place.”

Grace laughed in disbelief.

“Your place?”

“You wanted Ethan.”

The room went silent.

Grace felt humiliated.

“I have never wanted your husband.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Vanessa.”

But Marcus interrupted.

“We're not discussing jealousy yet.”

He looked at the footage.

“There's something else.”

He rewound.

At 11:41 p.m., a man appeared in the background.

Walking through the trees.

Grace hadn't noticed him.

Neither had anyone else.

Marcus zoomed in.

The man wore a dark jacket and cap.

He stopped behind Vanessa.

Vanessa turned.

They spoke.

Then he disappeared.

Marcus looked at Ethan.

“Do you recognize him?”

Ethan stared at the screen.

His face changed.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Ethan swallowed.

“My brother.”

Grace looked at him.

“Your brother?”

“Lucas.”

Marcus frowned.

“You said your brother was out of state.”

“He was.”

Ethan grabbed his phone.

“Not tonight.”

The room went silent again.

Then another security alert appeared.

The rear gate had been opened at 11:38 p.m.

By someone using Ethan's private access code.

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“I don't know anything about that.”

Marcus looked at Grace.

“Ms. Miller, did you see anyone else tonight?”

Grace thought.

Then she remembered.

Just before she heard the splash, she'd seen a shadow near the garden wall.

“I saw someone.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“Man or woman?”

“Man.”

“What was he carrying?”

Grace closed her eyes.

“A black bag.”

Marcus immediately stood.

“Find it.”

Security searched the garden.

Twenty minutes later, they found the bag.

Inside was a burner phone.

A pair of gloves.

And a folded photograph.

The photograph showed Noah.

Taken earlier that afternoon.

On the back were three words:

HEIR MUST DISAPPEAR.

Ethan's face went white.

Grace stared at the photograph.

This wasn't about jealousy.

This wasn't about her.

May you like

Someone had wanted Noah gone.

And Vanessa might not have been acting alone.
