CHAPTER 2: THE DECISION

"You don't have to decide right now," Daniel said quietly. "But the sun is setting, and your children are exhausted."
Ava was almost asleep on her feet. Ethan was trying to hide his shivers, even though the heat was still unbearable.
"What kind of arrangement are we talking about?" I asked.
"A contract. Six months. You live in my home. You accompany me to public events. And at the end, you walk away with enough money to start over anywhere you want."
"Six months?"
"The board meeting is in four weeks. I need to show them I'm stable. That I'm not the man they want to push out."
Stable. Married. Presentable.
I understood the rules of that game.
"What about my children?"
"They'll be safe. Educated. Cared for." His voice softened. "I wouldn't have stopped if I didn't want to help them."
I looked at him. Really looked.
He wasn't handsome in the conventional way. His face had too many sharp edges, too many lines of worry. But his eyes were steady. Honest.
I'd been around enough liars to recognize one.
He wasn't lying.
"Get in the car," I said.
Daniel didn't smile. He just nodded and helped Ethan with the bags while I guided Ava into the back seat. The leather was cool against my skin. The air conditioning hummed, and Ava's eyes fluttered closed almost immediately.
I was still holding the empty lunch container.
We drove in silence for the first few miles. I watched the desert fade into scrubland, then into small towns, then into the outskirts of Tucson.
Then my phone buzzed.
I'd forgotten I still had it. It had been dead for two days, but Daniel must have plugged it into the car charger.
A single text message.
From an unknown number.
I found you.
I stared at the screen.
"What is it?" Daniel asked.
"Nothing," I said, shoving the phone into my pocket. "Just spam."
But my hands were shaking.
Because I knew who had sent that message.
And I knew what she wanted.
My daughter.
Everything I'd tried to escape was about to catch up to me.
"Sarah?" Daniel's voice was concerned. "Are you all right?"
I looked at Ava. At Ethan. At the man who had offered us a way out.
"Yes," I lied. "I'm fine."
I wasn't fine.
I was terrified.
May you like
But I was going to protect my children if it killed me.
And it just might.
