CHAPTER 15: THE FUTURE

A year later, everything had changed.
My children were thriving. Ava was in school, making friends, being a normal kid. Ethan had started a robotics club. He was brilliant, just like his father had been.
But his father's legacy wasn't what mattered anymore.
What mattered was the family we'd built.
Daniel was a good father. Patient, kind, always there. He taught Ethan how to fish, how to build things, how to be a good man.
"I'm not replacing your father," he told Ethan once. "But I want to be someone you can count on."
Ethan had hugged him.
And I knew we were going to be okay.
Karen was still in prison. Richard was out on parole, but he was broken, a shell of the man he'd been. Natalie had vanished, choosing exile over facing her crimes.
The company was thriving. Daniel had taken it to new heights.
And I was finally at peace.
One night, I was sitting on the porch, watching the sunset, when Daniel came out with two glasses of wine.
"What are you thinking about?" he asked.
"The highway," I said. "The day you pulled over."
"Best decision I ever made."
"Even though I was a stranger?"
"Even though. I knew, the moment I saw you, that you were special."
I smiled.
"I knew too," I said.
"Then why did you hesitate?"
"Because I didn't trust myself. I'd been hurt so many times, I'd forgotten how to hope."
"And now?"
"Now, I hope. Every day."
Daniel leaned over and kissed my forehead.
"I love you," he said.
"I love you too."
We sat there, watching the stars come out.
And I knew, for the first time in my life, that I was exactly where I was supposed to be.
