CHAPTER 4: THE BADGE AND THE PROMISE

The judge carefully lifted the last item from the lunchbox.

An old employee badge.

Faded.

Cracked.

Marcus’s mother’s name on it.

The room shifted.

The boy’s grandmother spoke softly.

“Your mother gave me that after the fire.”

“She said, ‘If anything happens to me… don’t let them bury the truth.’”

Marcus closed his eyes.

For the first time in years, he wasn’t angry.

Just tired.

The judge turned to the prosecution.

“Drop all charges.”

Then added:

“And open a full investigation into Langford Corporation.”

The gavel struck.

Case closed.

Months later, Richard Langford was arrested for fraud, arson, and conspiracy.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Marcus.

But he ignored them.

He walked straight to the boy.

“Why did you bring this here?” Marcus asked.

The boy shrugged.

“My grandma said you deserved the truth.”

Marcus nodded slowly.

Then looked down at the lunchbox.

Inside was nothing left.

Except dust.

And silence.

But for the first time in twenty years…

The truth was no longer hidden.

May you like

It was finally heard.

THE END.
