CHAPTER 1: THE LUNCHBOX IN THE COURTROOM

The courtroom was already tense before the boy walked in.

Marcus Reed stood at the defense table, accused of stealing $500,000 from the powerful Langford family.

The evidence looked solid.

Security footage.

Fingerprints.

Bank transfers.

Everything pointed at him.

The prosecutor spoke confidently.

“This is an open-and-shut case, Your Honor.”

Then the back door opened.

A small boy walked in.

Dirty shoes. Oversized jacket. Nervous eyes.

And in his hands… an old metal lunchbox.

The bailiff immediately stepped forward.

“Hey kid, you can’t be in here.”

But the boy didn’t move.

His eyes locked on Marcus.

“My grandma said I had to bring this before they sent him away.”

The room went quiet for half a second.

Then someone in the gallery laughed.

The prosecutor shook his head.

“Your Honor, this is ridiculous.”

But Marcus wasn’t laughing.

The moment he saw the lunchbox, his face changed completely.

Fear. Recognition. Shock.

The judge noticed.

“Bring it here.”

The boy walked forward slowly and placed the lunchbox on the bench.

The judge opened it.

Inside: a toy car, a torn photograph, and an old napkin.

Four words were written on it:

“ASK ABOUT THE FIRE.”

The courtroom went dead silent.

Marcus whispered under his breath:

“No… not that…”

And for the first time, the prosecutor looked unsure.

Because everyone remembered the fire.

Even if they wished they didn’t.

And someone in that courtroom… had been connected to it.
