Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

Julian brought the documents at 9:00 a.m.
Arthur’s lawyers received copies first.
The power transfer would have given Vanessa voting control over 67% of Vance Living Group during Arthur’s incapacity.
Why 67%?
Because Julian had quietly acquired proxies from two minority family trusts.
Margaret traced those.
One belonged to Arthur’s late brother’s children.
They had never knowingly given Julian authority.
Another forged authorization.
The investigation expanded.
Arthur read every page slowly.
Vanessa sat beside him.
Julian stood near the window.
“Just sign here,” Vanessa whispered.
Arthur looked up.
“Why?”
She smiled.
“So you can rest.”
“I am resting.”
“The company needs certainty.”
“Does it?”
Julian stepped in.
“Arthur, markets hate ambiguity.”
“So do criminals.”
Silence.
Arthur let two seconds pass.
Then smiled faintly.
“Old joke.”
Julian laughed too quickly.
Arthur closed the folder.
“Tomorrow.”
Vanessa stiffened.
“Why?”
“My hand hurts.”
She wanted to argue.
Julian stopped her with a glance.
Arthur saw it.
Tiny.
Instant.
Enough.
They left.
Margaret entered five minutes later with Investigator Daniel Ross from the financial-crimes unit.
Arthur liked him immediately because he spoke without drama.
“We have sufficient basis to continue,” Ross said.
“Not arrest?”
“Not yet.”
“Good.”
Ross looked surprised.
“You don’t want her arrested?”
“I want it done correctly.”
Ross nodded.
They had three lines of investigation.
Financial exploitation.
Forged authority documents.
Possible interference with Arthur’s medical care.
No one was assuming the most serious allegation until lab evidence supported it.
Arthur respected that.
Then Ross placed photographs on the table.
Vanessa had been meeting Julian at a hotel near the hospital.
Not illegal.
But interesting.
They also met an estate-litigation attorney.
Why?
Because Vanessa expected Arthur’s revised planning.
Somehow she suspected.
“Did she know about the new will?” Arthur asked.
“Not necessarily.”
“She may simply be preparing for any change.”
Good.
Let her.
Arthur looked at Margaret.
“Can we create a document she is allowed to discover?”
Margaret immediately shook her head.
“No fake evidence.”
“Not fake.”
“What then?”
“A real memorandum.”
Arthur explained.
A legitimate estate-planning memo confirming that Vanessa’s inheritance rights remained under review because of unresolved trust issues.
Nothing false.
Nothing planted illegally.
Just a document Arthur had every right to create.
Then leave in a place Vanessa normally accessed.
Margaret considered.
“That’s not entrapment.”
“No.”
“It’s also childish.”
Arthur smiled.
“Maybe.”
The memo was prepared.
Two days later, Vanessa found it inside Arthur’s home office.
She did exactly what Arthur expected.
Photographed it.
Sent it to Julian.
Then deleted the photograph from her phone.
Cloud backup preserved it.
May you like
Arthur never had to confront her.
She was documenting herself.
