Chapter 14 - Caleb Learns What Arthur Really Left Him
Arthur did not leave Caleb $82 million.
Not anymore.
He called Caleb to his office six months after discharge.
Arthur was thinner.
Slower.
Alive.
That word had become luxurious.
Margaret joined them.
Caleb looked suspicious immediately.
“If this is another giant check…”
Arthur laughed.
“You’re exhausting.”
Margaret handed Caleb a folder.
Inside:
A scholarship fund for Mia.
A fully paid home for their mother.
And a minority nonvoting interest in a new employee-support foundation.
Caleb stared.
“What is this?”
“A job offer,” Arthur said.
Caleb blinked.
“I’m an orderly.”
“You’re trustworthy.”
“That is not a qualification.”
“It’s a useful start.”
The foundation needed someone who understood what ordinary employees experienced when medical crises collided with money.
Arthur was not making Caleb CEO.
Not handing him an empire.
He was offering training.
Education.
A path.
Caleb looked relieved.
“Thank God.”
Arthur frowned.
“What?”
“I thought you were about to give me the company.”
Arthur laughed harder than he had in months.
“No.”
“I made one emotional decision in a hospital bed.”
“My lawyer saved me from becoming ridiculous.”
Margaret raised her coffee.
“You’re welcome.”
Caleb accepted the training program.
Not because Arthur rescued him.
