Chapter 17 - Vanessa Comes Home

Vanessa served her sentence.

When released, she did not return to wealth.

But she was not penniless.

She moved into a small coastal condo owned with legitimate premarital money.

No Julian.

He had disappeared from her life long before sentencing.

One year after release, she asked Arthur for a meeting.

He almost refused.

Then agreed.

Public café.

Daylight.

Thirty minutes.

Vanessa looked older.

No dramatic transformation.

Just human.

“Thank you for coming.”

Arthur nodded.

She asked about his heart.

“Stable.”

“Good.”

A pause.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

Arthur waited.

Vanessa continued.

“I’m sorry I interfered with your medication.”

“I’m sorry I waited for you to die instead of leaving.”

“I’m sorry I tried to turn your illness into my financial plan.”

“I’m sorry I brought Julian into our marriage.”

Specific.

Good.

Arthur answered:

“I believe you.”

She began crying.

“Do you forgive me?”

Arthur thought.

“Yes.”

Her head lifted.

“But?”

“No but.”

“That doesn’t mean I trust you.”

“It doesn’t mean we become friends.”

“It doesn’t make what happened small.”

“It only means I don’t want to carry active anger anymore.”

Vanessa nodded.

Then laughed weakly.

“You always did like clean accounts.”

Arthur smiled.

“Occupational hazard.”

They finished coffee.

No hug.

No reunion.

May you like

No last kiss.

Just two people leaving through different doors.
