Chapter 9 - THE BRIDGE

One year had passed.

Lily was now two.

Running.

Laughing.

Chattering nonstop.

Life had found a rhythm.

A peaceful one.

Emma had stopped jumping at shadows.

Ethan had stopped apologizing for his mother.

They had built a life together.

Strong.

Resilient.

Indestructible.

Margaret still called.

Occasionally.

Unpredictably.

Emma had learned to handle her.

Short visits.

Supervised interactions.

Firm boundaries.

Margaret didn't like it.

But she accepted it.

Because the alternative was worse.

Complete isolation.

One afternoon Margaret called.

Her voice was different.

Softer.

"Emma?"

"Margaret."

"I need to see you."

"I have Lily at the park this afternoon."

"Can I come? Please?"

Emma hesitated.

"Emma, please."

Something in Margaret's voice...

Something broken.

"Okay. The park on Maple Street. We'll be there until three."

"Thank you."

Emma hung up.

She had a strange feeling.

Something had changed.

Margaret arrived at the park.

She looked different.

Older.

Tired.

Like she hadn't slept in days.

Lily was on the swings.

Laughing.

Flying.

Free.

Margaret approached Emma.

"Thank you for letting me come."

"I'm surprised you did."

Margaret nodded.

"I'm surprised too."

The women stood in silence.

Watching Lily play.

Finally Margaret spoke.

"I've been going to therapy."

Emma stared at her.

"What?"

Therapy.

The word seemed foreign.

Impossible.

"I realized... I was losing everything. My son. My granddaughter. My reputation. My future."

Margaret wiped her eyes.

"I didn't want to change. I wanted the world to change around me."

Emma said nothing.

"But I can't control the world. I can only control myself."

Margaret turned to face her.

"I know I can't undo the past. I know I've hurt you. Deeply. Unforgivably."

Emma felt her eyes sting.

"But I am trying to be better. Not for you. Not for Ethan. But for myself."

Margaret took a shaky breath.

"Because I don't want to die alone and bitter."

The words hung in the air.

Lily ran over.

"Grandma!"

Margaret's face transformed.

Joy.

Pure joy.

She knelt down.

"Hello, my sweet girl."

Lily hugged her.

"Wanna push me?"

"Of course."

Margaret looked up at Emma.

Asking permission.

Emma nodded slowly.

Margaret lifted Lily onto the swings.

Pushed gently.

Carefully.

Lovingly.

Emma watched.

The tension slowly leaving her shoulders.

Margaret smiled at her.

"Thank you."

Emma didn't speak.

But she nodded.

That was enough.

That night Emma told Ethan everything.

"My mother? Therapy?"

"She's changed."

"Em, she's tried this before."

"I know. But this time... something feels different."

Ethan shook his head.

"I'm scared to believe it."

"I know."

"I don't want to be hurt again."

"Neither do I."

Emma took his hands.

"But if she's really trying..."

"If she's not?"

"Then we protect ourselves. Like we've always done."

Ethan was quiet.

Then he nodded.

"Okay."

"Okay?"

"We give her one more chance."

Emma smiled.

"Thank you."

"But if she messes up—"

"Then we're done. Completely."

Ethan pulled her close.

"I love you."

"I love you too."

May you like

For the first time in a long time...

They allowed themselves to hope.
