Chapter 8 - THE VISITOR

A month passed.
Margaret had gone quiet.
Too quiet.
Emma knew better than to trust the silence.
But she allowed herself to relax.
Just slightly.
Just enough to breathe.
Then the visitor arrived.
It was a Tuesday afternoon.
Emma was in the backyard.
Lily was playing in the sandbox.
The sun was warm.
The birds were singing.
Everything felt normal.
Then she heard the knock.
The doorbell.
Emma opened the door.
A woman stood on the porch.
Middle-aged.
Dressed simply.
Kind eyes.
Strained smile.
"Mrs. Walker?"
Emma nodded.
"Can I help you?"
The woman hesitated.
"I'm Patricia Hayes."
The name meant nothing.
"I don't—"
"Margaret Walker is my sister."
Emma froze.
"I know this is awkward. But we need to talk."
Emma didn't move.
"I understand if you don't trust me."
"You're right. I don't."
Patricia nodded.
"That's fair. But please... hear me out."
Against her better judgment...
Emma stepped aside.
"Come in."
Patricia sat in the living room.
Her hands clasped nervously.
Lily was napping.
Emma was drinking water.
Waiting.
"I know you and my sister have had... issues."
Emma laughed bitterly.
"That's one word for it."
Patricia nodded.
"She's always been difficult."
"Difficult."
Patricia's eyes filled with tears.
"I'm not here to make excuses for her."
"Then why are you here?"
Patricia looked up.
"To tell you something."
Emma set down her glass.
"I'm listening."
"When we were growing up..."
Patricia paused.
"Our mother was a very cold woman."
Emma stayed silent.
"She didn't love us. Not the way mothers should."
Tears slipped down Patricia's face.
"Margaret was the oldest. She took the brunt of it. The criticism. The belittling."
Emma felt something shift.
"When she became a mother herself... she didn't know how to love. She only knew how to control."
Patricia looked at Emma.
"Because she thought that was love."
Emma didn't know what to say.
"But she does love Ethan. In her own damaged way. She just doesn't know how to show it."
"I've tried to help her."
"I know. I've seen how much you've tried."
"But she won't change."
Patricia nodded.
"Maybe she can't."
Emma stared at her.
"So what am I supposed to do?"
Patricia was quiet.
Then she spoke.
"Protect your family."
"I have been."
"I know. And that's exactly what you should continue to do."
Emma felt her eyes sting.
"Then why did you come here?"
Patricia smiled sadly.
"Because I wanted you to know... it was never about you."
Emma blinked.
"What?"
Margaret's cruelty. Her manipulation. Her constant attacks. None of it was personal.
"She would have done this to anyone. Anyone who threatened her position. Anyone who might take Ethan away."
Emma processed the words.
"I've blamed myself for so long."
"I know. And I'm sorry."
Patricia reached out.
Took Emma's hand.
"You are a good mother. A good wife. And you don't deserve any of this."
Emma cried.
For the first time in months.
Not tears of sadness.
But tears of relief.
That evening Emma told Ethan everything.
He listened silently.
"I never knew my aunt felt that way."
"She came to help. In her own way."
Ethan shook his head.
"My mother is broken. I've known it for years. I just didn't want to admit it."
"You were protecting her."
"At the cost of hurting you."
Emma took his hand.
"You chose me. That's all that matters."
"I should have chosen you from the beginning."
"You did. Eventually."
Ethan looked at her.
"I love you."
"I know."
"No, I mean... I really love you. I would do anything for you."
Emma smiled.
"I love you too."
For the first time...
They felt truly united.
Against the world.
May you like
Against everything.
Together.
