Chapter 6 - THE PAST UNCOVERED

Ethan drove home in silence.
The file sat on the passenger seat.
Burning a hole in his mind.
He didn't open it again.
He couldn't.
He parked in the driveway.
Sat there for ten minutes.
Just breathing.
Just thinking.
Emma appeared at the door.
She looked worried.
"Ethan? What happened?"
He didn't answer.
He walked inside.
Sat at the kitchen table.
Placed the file in front of him.
Emma's face went pale.
"What's that?"
"Open it."
She hesitated.
"Ethan, whatever you saw—"
"Open it."
Emma slowly opened the file.
Her hands trembled.
She saw the photographs first.
Her face drained of color.
"Where did you get this?"
"Does it matter?"
"Yes."
"My mother."
Emma closed her eyes.
"Of course."
"Explain."
She opened the file again.
Looked at the documents.
The address.
The name.
Her past.
Emma took a deep breath.
And began.
"Before I met you..."
She paused.
Tears formed.
"I was in a bad relationship."
Ethan said nothing.
"I was young. Stupid. I thought he loved me."
"The address?"
"His apartment."
"And the name?"
"My daughter's father."
Ethan froze.
Daughter?
"I had a baby."
The words fell like stones.
"She was born premature. She only lived three days."
Emma's voice cracked.
Ethan reached for her.
She pulled away.
"I never told you because it hurt too much. It still hurts."
Ethan didn't know what to say.
"I changed my name when I moved here. I wanted to start over. I never expected... I never thought..."
"Emma—"
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I should have. But every time I tried..."
She looked at him.
Tears streaming.
"I couldn't. It was like ripping the wound open again."
Ethan stood.
Walked to her.
Pulled her close.
"Hey. Hey. It's okay."
"Ethan, I should have—"
"I'm not angry."
She looked up.
"What?"
"I'm not angry. I'm sad. Sad that you went through that alone. Sad that I didn't know."
Emma cried harder.
"I was so scared you'd leave."
Ethan held her tighter.
"Never. Never."
They stayed like that for a long time.
Holding each other.
Healing slowly.
That night Ethan called his mother.
She answered quickly.
"I knew you'd call."
"Don't."
"Don't what?"
"Don't pretend you did this for me."
Margaret's voice hardened.
"I did it to protect you."
"You did it to hurt her."
"She's been lying to you!"
"She lost a child."
Silence.
"She kept it from me because it destroyed her."
"Ethan—"
"You weaponized her pain. Her trauma. To get what you wanted."
"I was trying to help you."
"Listen to me carefully."
Ethan's voice was ice.
"If you ever, ever do anything like this again..."
"What? What will you do?"
"I will cut you out of our lives completely."
"You wouldn't."
"Try me."
Margaret was silent.
Ethan continued.
"No more visits. No more calls. No more letters. We're done."
"You're choosing her again."
"No."
His voice softened.
"Not again. I've chosen her every day. I'm just finally telling you."
He hung up.
The house was quiet.
Emma slept upstairs.
Lily slept peacefully in her room.
Ethan sat in the darkness.
And felt something shift.
Something permanent.
Something final.
May you like
He had drawn the line.
Now he had to hold it.
