Chapter 4 - CRACKS IN THE PEACE

Three months had passed since Margaret's apology.

Emma watched her mother-in-law from the kitchen window.

Margaret was pushing the baby swing.

Gently.

Carefully.

Almost tenderly.

It should have felt like progress.

It didn't.

Something felt wrong.

Emma couldn't explain it.

A knot in her stomach.

A whisper in her mind.

She hasn't changed.

She's waiting.

Emma shook the thought away.

Stop it. She apologized. She's trying.

But the knot remained.

That evening Ethan came home late.

Exhausted.

His construction job had been brutal.

Twelve hours of pouring concrete in the summer heat.

He collapsed onto the couch.

Emma handed him a cold beer.

"Rough day?"

He nodded.

"Your mother came by."

Ethan froze mid-sip.

"Again?"

"Just for an hour."

He set the beer down.

"Everything okay?"

Emma hesitated.

Too long.

Ethan noticed.

"What happened?"

"Nothing."

"Emma."

She sat beside him.

"She brought gifts. Clothes. Toys. She played with Lily for an hour."

"That sounds good."

"It should."

"But?"

Emma struggled to explain.

"She was... too nice."

Ethan stared at her.

"Too nice?"

"I know how it sounds."

"Em, she's finally trying."

"I know."

Ethan sighed.

"What do you want me to do?"

"I don't want you to do anything."

"Then what?"

Emma looked at him.

"Just... watch."

Ethan didn't understand.

But he nodded anyway.

Because he trusted her.

Even when he didn't fully agree.

The next weekend Margaret invited them to dinner.

Her house.

Her territory.

Emma wanted to refuse.

But Ethan convinced her.

"One dinner. Two hours. We leave early."

Emma reluctantly agreed.

The dinner was perfect.

Too perfect.

Margaret had cooked Ethan's favorite meal.

She had bought Lily a new dress.

She had cleaned the house spotless.

Everything sparkled.

Everything smiled.

Everything felt rehearsed.

Emma watched from across the table.

Margaret was laughing at one of Ethan's stories.

Her hand touched his arm.

Her eyes never left his face.

Then Margaret glanced at Emma.

Just for a second.

And in that second...

Emma saw something flicker.

Cold.

Calculating.

There you are.

Emma's blood ran cold.

Margaret immediately looked away.

Smiled again.

Laughed again.

But the mask had slipped.

Just for a moment.

Emma spent the rest of dinner silent.

Watching.

Waiting.

Knowing something was coming.

She just didn't know what.

That night Emma couldn't sleep.

She lay in bed staring at the ceiling.

Ethan snored softly beside her.

Lily slept peacefully in the next room.

Everything was calm.

Everything was quiet.

Everything felt wrong.

Emma finally drifted off.

But her dreams were troubled.

Margaret's face.

Twisted.

Angry.

You'll never be family.

Emma woke gasping.

Ethan stirred.

"Em? You okay?"

She nodded.

"Just a nightmare."

He pulled her closer.

"It's okay. I've got you."

Emma clung to him.

But she couldn't shake the feeling.

May you like

The feeling that the nightmare wasn't over.

It was just beginning.
