Chapter 15 - The Table Changed

Il Canto changed ownership again.

The private VIP room remained.

Table 7 remained.

Gabriel avoided it for years.

Then Beatrice booked it for her eightieth birthday.

She invited Chloe.

Gabriel.

Miriam.

Daniel Cho.

Several Deaf friends.

No captains.

No old lieutenants.

Marco came as a guest after apologizing to Chloe again.

This time she told him to stop.

"You're making forgiveness into another shift."

He laughed.

"Fair."

The server approached Gabriel first.

"What can I get everyone?"

Gabriel pointed toward Beatrice.

"Her table."

Beatrice ordered in ASL.

Daniel interpreted because he was working.

Chloe sat beside Gabriel as a guest.

That distinction mattered.

Seafood risotto.

Barolo.

Of course.

Gabriel ordered bread.

Beatrice stared.

He signed:

I KNOW. YOU DON'T WANT IT.

She signed:

I DO TONIGHT.

He laughed.

People talked with voices, hands, both.

Nobody treated silence as absence.

At dessert, Beatrice stood.

She signed a toast.

Daniel voiced.

"My son spent years believing love meant providing everything except the thing I asked for."

Gabriel looked down.

Beatrice continued.

"I spent years believing if I could not make him understand immediately, I should stop trying."

She looked at Chloe.

"Then a tired waitress with terrible workplace boundaries insulted him in my language."

The room laughed.

Chloe raised her wine.

"Accurate."

Beatrice signed:

"And nothing became easy."

Good.

"Easy is not the same as better."

Gabriel watched his mother's hands.

No interpreter needed for most of it now.

She finished:

"People deserve direct access to their own lives."

Everyone raised a glass.

After dinner, Gabriel remained at Table 7.

Chloe sat beside him.

"Thinking?"

"Unfortunately."

"About Dominic?"

"No."

"Your father?"

"No."

He looked at the chair where Beatrice had sat the first night.

"About bread."

Chloe laughed.

Then Gabriel signed:

MARRY ME?

Chloe froze.

He looked terrified.

No ring.

No audience.

No kneeling.

She stared at his hands.

"You planned this in ASL?"

He nodded.

"Your grammar is correct."

"Daniel checked."

"Cheating."

"Strategic consultation."

She smiled.

Then signed:

NOT YET.

Gabriel's face fell.

Chloe touched his hand.

"Ask again later."

He breathed.

Then nodded.

"Okay."

That answer might once have felt like defeat.

Now it felt like trust.

Six months later, Chloe asked him.

At Beatrice's condo.

Over soup.

Gabriel nearly choked.

Beatrice signed:

SAY YES BEFORE SHE CHANGES HER MIND.

Gabriel signed:

YES.

Chloe laughed.

Their wedding was small.

Beatrice wore blue.

She gave no speech about destiny.

Neither did anyone else.

Miriam signed the license as witness.

Daniel interpreted the ceremony because Chloe wanted Beatrice to receive every word directly.

Gabriel signed his vows himself.

Slow.

Clear.

No substitute.
