Chapter 1 - The Seventy-Five Cents“Daddy… do I cost too much?”

Callum Calder stopped with one hand inside his work bag.

Sadie stood beside the kitchen table in pink socks and dinosaur pajamas, three quarters clenched in her fist.

Before he could answer, she pushed the coins toward the front pocket of his bag.

Quickly.

Secretly.

Like she hoped he would not catch her paying.

Callum crouched.

“Sweetheart. What are those for?”

Sadie looked at the floor.

“The cookie.”

His chest tightened.

“What cookie?”

“The one after lunch.”

“You don’t pay me for cookies.”

She looked confused.

“And my bath.”

At the sink, Ivy stopped drying a plate.

Callum looked at his wife.

She had gone completely still.

Sadie opened her hand.

Three quarters.

“The cookie is twenty-five,” she whispered. “Bath is fifty.”

Callum felt something cold move through him.

“Who told you that?”

Sadie immediately curled her shoulders inward.

“Am I in trouble?”

“No.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

Her eyes lifted slowly.

“Grandma says everything costs somebody.”

Callum closed his eyes.

Two weeks.

They had been out of his parents’ house for two weeks.

He had told himself distance would fix it.

They had lived with Walter and Diane Calder for only two months while their old lease ended and the new apartment was finished.

Eight weeks.

That was all.

Eight weeks of Diane deciding Sadie had eaten too much.

Eight weeks of telling a four-year-old she had not earned dessert because she cried during dinner.

Eight weeks of removing noodles from in front of her because she had spilled milk.

Then the night Callum finally left—

Sadie reached for a second cookie.

Diane slapped the back of her hand.

Not hard enough to leave a bruise.

Hard enough to leave something else.

Callum packed the car that night.

He believed that was the ending.

Now his daughter was trying to pay him for bathing her.

He folded her fingers over the quarters.

“These are yours.”

Sadie frowned.

“But I used the water.”

“You live here.”

“The water still costs.”

“Yes.”

“Then who pays?”

“I do.”

Her face tightened.

“So I owe you.”

“No.”

“But if you pay because of me—”

“Sadie.”

Callum struggled to keep his voice gentle.

“You are four.”

She waited.

“You do not owe me for food.”

Silence.

“You do not owe me for water.”

Her lip trembled.

“You do not owe me for your bed, or your clothes, or hugs, or stories, or being my daughter.”

Sadie looked at the coins.

Then asked the question that nearly destroyed him.

“What if I use too much daughter?”

Callum stared at her.

Ivy made a sound behind him.

Sadie immediately looked frightened.

“Mommy?”

Ivy turned away, covering her mouth.

Callum pulled Sadie against him.

“There is no too much.”

She stayed stiff for several seconds.

Then slowly leaned into his chest.

That night, she fell asleep between Callum and Ivy.

At eleven thirty, Ivy came out of Sadie’s room carrying the battered purple backpack they had brought from Walter and Diane’s house.

“I found something.”

Callum sat up.

Inside the front pocket was a small index card.

Blue lines.

Diane’s handwriting.

At the top:

SADIE’S HOUSE ACCOUNT

Cookie — $0.25

Bath — $0.50

Night-light — $0.10

Extra bedtime story — $0.25

Wasted noodles — $1.00

Crying at dinner — $0.50

Callum’s hand started shaking.

Ivy whispered, “Turn it over.”

He did.

On the back was one sentence.

Daddy still owes Grandma $43,780. Good girls help their family pay what they owe.

For several seconds Callum could not breathe.

Ivy whispered, “What is forty-three thousand seven hundred eighty dollars?”

“I don’t know.”

His phone rang.

Mom.

Callum stared at it.

Then answered.

Diane did not say hello.

“If you found Sadie’s card,” she said, “bring it back.”

Callum’s voice went cold.

“Why?”

A pause.

“Because it belongs with your ledger.”

Callum stopped breathing.

“My what?”

Diane sighed.

“The one we’ve been keeping since you were nineteen.”
