Chapter 14 - What Salvatore Left Behind

Two years after the dinner at Il Canto, Gabriel returned to Taylor Street.
Alone.
Mostly.
Chloe waited upstairs.
Beatrice sat in the old basement on a folding chair.
The red recipe box rested between them.
Gabriel had avoided it.
Too much father.
Too much instruction.
Beatrice signed:
OPEN.
He did.
They cooked from Salvatore's cards together.
Badly.
Gabriel chopped onions.
Beatrice corrected him.
He signed:
DAD DID IT THIS WAY.
She signed:
DAD WAS WRONG ABOUT MANY THINGS.
Fair.
Then Gabriel found one recipe card stuck behind another.
Tomato sauce.
On the back, Salvatore had written:
Gabriel hates fennel. Beatrice likes too much salt. Dominic steals bread before dinner.
Ordinary.
Gabriel stared.
Then laughed.
Beatrice cried.
For years every surviving sentence from Salvatore had become evidence.
Succession.
Legacy.
Crime.
Regret.
This one was simply dinner.
Gabriel handed it to his mother.
She touched Dominic's name.
Then turned the card over.
The past could contain love and betrayal without one erasing the other.
Chloe came downstairs.
"What did I miss?"
Gabriel showed her.
She smiled.
"Your father had accurate notes about bread theft."
Beatrice signed:
DOMINIC ALWAYS STOLE THE END PIECE.
Nobody needed to forgive him to remember it.
That night, Gabriel told Chloe:
"I spent years thinking understanding someone meant deciding whether they were good or bad."
"Efficient."
"Wrong."
"Usually."
He looked at her.
"Do you think I'm good?"
Chloe groaned.
"No."
He blinked.
She continued.
"I think you're a person who has done harmful things and some decent things and is now annoyingly committed to asking philosophical questions over pasta."
Gabriel smiled.
"I love you."
Chloe stopped.
He had never said it.
Not directly.
She looked at him.
"That doesn't make me responsible for you."
"I know."
"Say it again."
"I love you."
She kissed him.
Then said:
"I love you too."
No engagement.
No empire.
No promise that love fixed history.
Just truth.
Beatrice watched from the sink.
Chloe caught her.
"Stop staring."
Beatrice signed:
I AM DEAF, NOT BLIND.
Gabriel understood that one without help.
He laughed.
Later, Beatrice gave Chloe Leo's memorial bracelet back.
Chloe frowned.
"I didn't give this to you."
Beatrice pointed.
It had slipped from Chloe's wrist while washing dishes.
Beatrice signed:
KEEP HIM.
Chloe looked down.
For years she had feared moving forward meant leaving Leo behind.
Beatrice understood the lie.
You do not have to lose one person to love another.
Chloe closed her fingers around the bracelet.
Then signed:
THANK YOU.
